PROVO, Utah - PROVO, Utah - After a four match-win streak, the University of Utah women's soccer team was looking to upset first-place BYU on Saturday for a share of the Mountain West Conference regular season title. As the final seconds ticked off of the clock, the Cougars were the MWC regular season champions, defeating the Utes 3-0.
BYU's offense attacked early, taking nine shots in the first period while limiting Utah to three. Ute goalkeeper Lynssey Asay had five saves in the first period. Just before the 30-minute mark, the Cougars scored the first goal of the game from a Kim Devine shot. Lydia Ojuka and Jeni Viernes were credited with assists.
Asay continued to battle the Cougar attack with five more saves in the second period. In the 60th minute, Ojuka scored to put BYU up by two. Viernes and Aleisha Cramer were credited with assists. Cramer would seal the game, by scoring an insurance goal with less than three minutes to play.
The Utes were out-shot by the Cougars, 23-8 in the match. BYU had 13 shots on goal, while limiting Utah to five. Asay suffered her second loss of the season and is 8-2 on the year. Maren Harper led the Utes with three shots, followed by Shauna Gurr-Bingham and Amy Kofoed with two shots apiece.
The loss dropped the Utes to 10-6-0 overall and 3-3-0 in the Mountain West Conference. BYU's victory sealed a 5-1-0 conference record (11-6-1 overall) to give the Cougars the MWC crown.
With regular-season complete, the Utes will travel to Las Vegas to participate in the Mountain West Conference tournament next week. The tournament will begin on Nov. 7 and wrap-up on Nov. 10.
