LAS VEGAS - LAS VEGAS - Mountain West Conference women's soccer action continued on Thursday evening at the conference championships held at Peter Johann Memorial Field on the campus of UNLV. The first semifinal match-up featured No. 4 seed Utah against top-seeded BYU. When the two teams met in the regular season finale in Provo, the Utes suffered a 3-0 loss to the Cougars.
At the 11-minute mark, BYU's Lydia Ojuka scored the game's first goal off of a header. The shot was taken from a deflection off a Utah player.
The Cougars would score again in the 25th minute when an Aleisha Cramer kick ricocheted off a Ute defender into Ojuka's possession. Ojuka subsequently scored her second goal of the game. Aggressive play led to three first-period yellow cards. At the end of the period, BYU took a 2-0 advantage to the break.
In the second period, the two teams battled back and forth. Tough defensive play by both teams limited opportunities around the goal.
With less than five minutes left in the match, Utah sophomore Esther Imotan was injured in a collision on the field, stopping the game for ten minutes. Imotan was carried off of the field on a backboard. She was taken into UNLV's sports medicine facilities to be examined for the severity of her injury.
Utah took six second-half shots but was unable to convert, as the Cougars held on to take a 2-0 win and advance to the championship game.
"I thought we played very well," Coach Amy Winslow said. "Not only did we give 100 percent, but we played intelligently in the second half. We had to play at our best to keep them scoreless in the second half.
Utah goalkeeper Lynnsey Asay suffered the loss for the Utes, falling to 9-3 on the season. Senior Amy Kofoed took three shots (two shots-on-goal), but was unable to improve on her school record of 46 career goals. Shauna Gurr-Bingham also took three shots in the Ute effort.
The Utes are hoping to receive a bid for the NCAA tournament which will commence the first round of play on Nov. 16.
