COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--The Utes earned a pair of sixth place finishes at the Mountain West Conference Championships. On the women's side, the Utes led the first day of competition with 12 points and maintained third place through 13 events on the second day of competition. "We ran out of athletes to keep competing on the final day of competition against the full roster teams. Not having Alexandria Nash (leg injury) in the triple jump and having no pole vaulters cost us points. I know we impressed the other coaches with the talented athletes we have, but we just didn't have enough overall points to contend," said Coach Mike Jones. "The men compete solely in the running events since we don't yield a full men's team so sixth place is a great finish," said Coach Jones.
Teren Jameson won the 3,000-meter run in 8:33.49 minutes. Nellie Hammons posted her highest finish, second place, in the 800-meter run with 2:16.90. April Jackson finished third in the 60-meter hurdles with a career best 8.67 seconds, while Kristy Slade finished seventh in 8.94. Slade topped the Ute women in the pentathlon finishing fourth (3563 points). Following Slade were Erianne Allen in fifth place (3469 points) and Shanae Nixon in sixth place (3418 points). In the weight throw, Audrey Kiser finished third (56'05.75") and Chantel Goldsberry finished fourth (56'03.25"). This is the first time Kiser has placed higher than Goldsberry at a meet.
Jameson, Jackson, Hammons and Kiser brought home all-conference honors for finishing in the top-three in their event. Chris Laman, (B.J.) Brad Christenson, Adam Stark and Teren Jameson finished third in the distance medley relay to earn all-conference honors. Their time of 10:24.11, along with the other top-two teams time broke the existing MWC record for the distance medley relay (10:24.54).
Head Coach Mike Jones was named MWC Indoor Coach of the Year on the womens side. This is the fifth time Jones has received conference coach of the year honors.
