STOCKTON, CALIF. -
The University of Utah baseball team fell to 0-4 on the season with a 3-2 loss against the Pacific Tigers. Pacific rallied from a two-run deficit, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
Mike Westfall provided the Utes with both runs when he hit Utah's first home run of the season in the second inning. The two-run shot came with two out. Pacific got one run back in the fifth, before tying it in the seventh on a passed ball. In that seventh inning Utah hurt themselves, allowing a wild pitch, a hit batter and the crucial passed ball.
Pacific took the lead in the eighth on an error by Utes shortstop Tommy Maestas. David Ebright (0-1) took the loss for the Utes. Utah's starter Ryan Bailey (0-0) went 4 innings, allowing only one hit and no runs.
The Ute outfielders contributed two hits in the game, matching the output they had in three games against Cal Poly last weekend. The Utes have now allowed their opponent to come from behind to win in every game this season.
The two teams will play a double-header on Saturday and wrap-up the series on Sunday. Saturday's first game is scheduled for 2 p.m. (MST) with Travis Palmer (0-0, 6.75) going for the Utes against Jason Walker (0-0, 30.86) for Pacific. Game two will feature the Utes Cheyenne Rushton (0-0, 9.00) against Todd Culp (0-1, 9.64) for Pacific.
