RIVERSIDE, CALIF. -
Utah scored in each of the first six innings, on their way to an 18-14 win over the UC-Riverside Highlanders. UCR (3-3) trailed 17-3 after six, but rallied for 11 runs over the last three innings to make it close.
The Utes (2-5) got home runs from Chris Shelton, Sam Swenson, Rob Stuart and Tommy Maestas. Third baseman Mike Westfall led all Utes with four hits. He also scored two runs and had four RBI. As a team Utah put together a season high 23 hits.
Ryan Bailey (1-0) was the benefactor of all that offense. He pitched five innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs while picking up the victory. He also had three strike outs and four walks in his second start of the year.
UCR's Drew Murphy shut down the Ute offense over the final three innings, holding them to just one run and one hit, allowing his team to make a comeback. The Highlanders scored seven times in the ninth, when they sent 10 hitters to the plate.
Every Ute starter but Donald Hawes scored a run, while Brit Pannier was the only Ute that didn't get a hit, though he scored two runs.
The two teams will play the second game of the three game series on Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m. (MST).
