SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Utah jumped out to a 4-1 lead through five innings before San Diego State rallied for two runs in the seventh and two more in the ninth as the Aztecs came away with a 5-4 win over the Utes on Friday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The loss knocked Utah out of the double-elimination Mountain West Conference Tournament. The Utes lost to New Mexico and defeated BYU the first two days.
After San Diego State got a run on three hits in the bottom of the second, Utah answered with three runs in the top of the third. Nate Weese brought in Donnie Saba with a sacrifice fly to center. Chris Shelton then hit a two-run homer 360 feet to left center that also scored Adam Castleton.
Leading 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Ute starter Jason Wylie ran out of gas, and was relived by Brett Lindsey. Two runs came in as Lindsey gave up a hit and walked two. Matt McAfee held the lead for two innings, retiring the side in the seventh and eighth in order with three strikeouts.
In the ninth, McAfee gave up a lead-off single to Taber Lee before stepping aside. Mitch Maio then surrendered a single to Anthony Gwynn. Lee scored on a sacrifice fly with one away. With two outs Ben Leuthard singled to center to drive in Gwynn from third and score the winning run.
Maio took the loss to fall to 2-2. Royce Ring got the win for San Diego State, working the final inning and one-third in relief, to improve to 6-2.
Mike Westfall went 3-for-4 and Weese was 2-for-4 for Utah, which finished 27-29. The Utes left nine runners stranded.
