Colorado Springs, Colo. - Utah was one of three Mountain West Conference schools that appeared in the USA Today/AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches' Association) Preseason Poll, announced on Mon., Aug. 13. Brigham Young and Colorado State ranked 11th and 14th, while Utah, with 254 points, checked in at No. 21.
Utah's 2001 schedule could compete as one of the 20 toughest schedules in the country. The non-conference competition is comprised of schools from the Atlantic 10, Atlantic Coast, Big 12, Big Sky, Big 10, Big West, Conference USA, Missouri Valley, Pac-10 and the West Coast Conference. The 2001 schedule highlights 11 matches against nine 2000 NCAA Tournament participants. Utah will face nine teams that are ranked or received votes in the Aug. 13th preseason poll. The Utes will take on Georgia Tech, Texas Tech, Arizona, Louisville, Colorado, Loyola Marymount and Utah State in non-conference play, and will match-up with conference foes Brigham Young and Colorado State twice each in the regular season.
The Utes will host the Utah Classic, Aug. 31-Sept. 1, then travel to Tucson, Ariz., for the Arizona Tournament on Sept. 6-7. They will take on Colorado at home on Sept. 8, before hosting the Utah/Illinois Challenge on Sept. 14-15. Utah opens MWC play with in-state rival Brigham Young on Sept. 20, in Provo, Utah.
"The 2001 schedule should be the toughest and strongest that Utah volleyball has ever had," says Launiere. "I traditionally like to build a strong schedule, and this year, I decided to make what I think is even more of a jump in our strength of schedule. I decided last year that we might have more losses going into the NCAAs, but we're not going to go in with an eight or nine seed. I rolled the dice and took a chance. I think we can win a lot of matches with this schedule and help up our seeding in the NCAAs. That is our plan and I have the confidence in our team that we can do it, even if it compares to one of the toughest 20 schedules in the country."
