Provo, Utah - The No. 21 ranked University of Utah women's volleyball team opened Mountain West Conference play with a 3-0 loss to No. 14 ranked Brigham Young at Smith Fieldhouse on Thurs. Sept. 20. The Utes lost three straight, 30-26, 30-25, 30-25. Utah drops to 4-3 overall, 0-1 in the MWC. BYU improves to 6-1 on the season, 1-0 in MWC play.
Senior Alisa Geddes led the team with 10 kills and nine digs. McKelle Stilson totaled eight kills for a .667 hitting percentage, and Adrianne Drake had five kills for a .364 hitting percentage. Teammates Katrena Ellett and Kim Turner added seven kills, respectively. Freshman setter Kelsie Kartchner posted 23 assists and Tracy Neumeier had 15 assists in the match. As a team Utah posted a .176 hitting percentage and 5.0 total team blocks.
For the Cougars, Nina Puikkonen and Jackie Bundy each totaled 11 kills. Sunny Mahe added 10 kills and eight digs. Natalie Whittaker led the team with 13 digs. Karina Puikkonen added eight kills for a .667 hitting percentage and 35 assists. BYU hit for .263, adding 9.0 total team blocks.
"We hurt ourselves with missed serves and when we served well, we took them out of their game," said Head Coach Beth Launiere. "We have to mature as a team, we have some young kids, but we are on the verge of becoming a better team. This (Smith Fieldhouse) is always a tough place to play, but if you put yourself in this position enough times, you're going to learn from it and gain experience. We've got to get better at winning on the road."
UP NEXT: On Sat., Sept. 22, the Utes will meet Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, Calif. at 7:00 p.m. On Tues., Sept. 25, the Utes will face Idaho State at 7:00 p.m. in Pocatello, Idaho. Utah is back in action at home on Fri., Sept. 28 vs. Air Force and on Sat., Sept. 29 vs. New Mexico. Match times are set for 7:00 p.m. The Utes hit the road on Fri., Oct. 5, travelling to Fort Collins, Colo., and facing Colorado State at 7:00 p.m. On Sat., Oct. 6, Utah will take on the Wyoming Cowgirls at 7:00 p.m. in Laramie, Wyo.
