SALT LAKE CITY - Utah sophomore Missy Dennis scored two goals for the University of Utah women's soccer team as they shutout Boston University in Thursday's action. The win improved the Utes to 4-2-0 on the season. With the loss, Boston fell to 4-2-1 overall on the season.
Amy Kofoed put the Utes on the scoreboard in the 12th minute of the game by blazing past the defense and scoring her second goal of the season. Shauna Gurr-Bingham was credited with the assist as Utah held a 1-0 advantage at the half. "I felt that we played sloppy in the first half," said coach Amy Winslow. "They were a good team, but we kept getting caught out of position and letting them get behind us."
The Utes pressured Boston in the second half, sparked by Dennis' first goal 64 minutes into the game. Less than three more minutes were played before Dennis scored her second goal, with a head shot, from a Gurr-Bingham and Julie Herdic assist. Herdic added the final punch by scoring a goal at the 87:41 mark. "The second half we played much better. We were aggressive and had a good speed of play," said Winslow.
Kofoed's goal was the 36th of her career at Utah, as she trails Staci Burt's (Carolina Courage) school record of 38. Dennis leads the team in goals this season with four. Courtney Hills earned the win at the goalkeeper position, improving her record to 2-2 on the season.
The Utes will host the Arizona Wildcats on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Ute Field. Arizona is 3-1-1 this season and will face off against BYU on Friday. "Arizona is a very fast team," said Winslow. "They have proved very much from last season and it is going to be a tough challenge.
