Ute Volleyball Team Suffers First Loss Of Season

Tucson, Ariz. - The No. 19 ranked University of Utah women's volleyball team lost to the No. 5 ranked Arizona Wildcats in three games, 30-24, 30-22, 30-22 at the McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz., on Thurs., Sept. 6. Utah moves to 3-1 overall, 0-0 in the MWC. Arizona improves to 4-0 on the season.
The Utes held their ground against a No. 5 ranked Arizona Wildcats in Tucson, Ariz., Thursday night. All three games were close, and the Utes lost a hard-fought battle. Physically, the smaller Ute squad was outmanned, but they never gave up and came close, maybe even too close for Arizona's comfort.
Senior Adrianne Bradley-Drake led the team with 10 kills, four digs and five total blocks. Sophomore Kim Turner racked up nine kills for a .471 hitting percentage and four total blocks. Junior Sylva Strzinkova added nine kills in the match. Senior Alisa Geddes led the Utes with eight digs, while freshman Kelsie Kartchner posted 23 assists. As a team Utah posted a .068 hitting percentage and 10.0 total team blocks.
For the Wildcats, Shannon Torregrosa, Lisa Rutledge and Jill Talbot combined for 41 of Arizona's 52 kills. Dana Burkholder racked up 47 assists, while Talbot led the team with 15 digs. Arizona hit for .279, adding 13.5 total team blocks.
"They (Arizona) had three hitters that we physically had a hard time defending," said Head Coach Beth Launiere. "I felt good about every other part of the match. We competed hard and will use this match to build upon."
UP NEXT: On Fri., Sept. 7, Utah will match-up with Louisville. Match-time is 7:00 p.m. Utah will host the Utah/Illinois Challenge on Fri.-Sat., Sept. 14-15 at Crimson Court. The Utes will face Illinois State on Sept. 14 at 7:00 p.m.. On Sept. 15, Utah will match-up with Illinois at 7:00 p.m. On Thurs., Sept. 20, the Utes open Mountain West Conference action on the road in Provo, Utah, facing Brigham Young at 7:00 p.m. On Sat., Sept. 22, Utah meets No. 24 ranked Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, Calif. at 7:00 p.m. (PDT).
