University of Utah soccer player, Maren Harper, was one of 11 female student-athletes to be named to the 2001 Verizon Women's Soccer Academic All-America Team for District VIII.
In her junior season, Harper started all 15 games she played in at the defender position. As one of the team captains, she helped lead the Utes to an 11-7 overall record. Harper has been a three-year starter since joining the Utes in 1999 and has been an academic all-conference selection each year.
The selections were made by the Colleges Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). This year marks the 50th year that the Academic All-America program has been in place, honoring more than 12,000 students in its history.
Student-athletes must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, be a starter or important reserve and be in at least their second season at their current school. Harper and the other District VIII honorees will advance to the national Verizon All-American ballot, with the national winners being announced on Feb. 7, 2002.
