THIS WEEK: The No. 25 ranked Utes (5-1-2) will take on instate rivals Utah State (6-2-2) and Weber State (4-4-1). The bout with the Aggies will be played, Wednesday, Oct. 2, on Ute Field at 4:00 p.m. and the game with the Wildcats will be held, Saturday, Oct. 5, at 1:00 p.m. in Ogden, Utah.
SCOUTING UTAH STATE: Last week, the Aggies defeated both Boise State (2-1) and Northern Arizona (3-0). Utah State is off to their best start in the program's seven-year history, as they improve to an impressive 6-2-2 (.700) overall record. Utah State standout Ally Clegg is tied for the most career assists at USU with eight. She has recorded three assists thus far this season.
SCOUTING WEBER STATE: The Wildcats split their two-game battle with Hawaii last week 1-1. Weber State edged out Hawaii, 3-2, in a comeback victory on Friday, but were later shutout on Sunday by Hawaii, 4-0. Earlier this season, WSU's goalkeeper Kandice Golar was awarded Big Sky Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. Golar racked up 17 saves and a 1.01 Goals-Against Average in WSU's 2-1 win over Wyoming and 2-2 tie against Colorado College.
UTE NOTES: Utah is coming into this week ranked No. 25 in the Soccer Times poll. They are 14th in the NCAA Goals-Against Average (0.56)and tied for 18th in the Shutout Percentatge category. The Utes are also ranked No. 10 in the NSCAA Western regional poll and the Soccer Buzz regional poll.
LAST WEEK: The Utes lost their first game of the season in a double-overtime thriller to Saint Mary's, 2-1, Sunday on Ute Field. Junior Missy Dennis led the Utes with her solo goal at the 41:09 mark off an assist from teammate Bobbie Benegas. The Gaels tied the game late in the second half off a goal from Sara Takekawa. The game winning goal came from SMC's Shauna Rech with 36 seconds remaining in the second overtime. Rech's amazing 20-yard blast struck off the top of the goal post and then bounced off keeper Asay-Kimball's shoulder to end the game at 2-1 and improve the Gaels' record to 4-5-1.
QUOTING COACH MANNING: "It is always exciting when two local teams go up against each other," says Manning. " Many of the players know each other and there is a lot of personal pride on the line. Both the Utah State and the Weber State games will be intense, hard-fought battles."
NEXT WEEK: Utah will remain on the road next week as they face Wyoming and Air Force. The Wyoming game will be played on Oct. 10 at 3:00 p.m. in Laramie, Wyo., and the Air Force match will be held on Oct. 12 at 10:00 a.m. in Colorado Springs, Colo.
