LARAMIE, Wyoming - The No. 25 ranked Utes (8-1-2) rally to beat Wyoming, 4-1, in its first conference match of the season. This win puts Utah on a three game winning streak and places them in front of the pack in the Mountain West Conference.
In the win, senior forward Shauna Gurr-Bingham tied former Ute standout Staci Burt for the No. 1 position in career assists. Gurr-Bingham's assist to Tracy Stratton for the Utes' first goal in the contest was the deciding factor that moved her up in the record book. Gurr-Bingham now stands at 21 assists.
Utah displayed too much offense for the Cowgirls as they pulled away with a extraordinary victory. Stratton got the ball rolling for the Utes in the first half, but it was the Utes' offense attack in the second half that allowed them to take the commanding lead.
Amber Brower put Utah up 2-1 at the 52:17 mark off an assist from Missy Dennis. Dennis would later answer again with a goal of her own at the 68:47 minute. Dennis blazed one pass goalkeeper Lori Scheider, after taking a pass from junior defender Jen Williams. This goal marked Dennis' seventh goal of the year.
Sophomore Julie Herdic put the game out of reach with her unassisted goal at the 75:51 mark. Utah shotout the Cowgirls by an amazing 20-5.
"It's good to see our offensive backs getting involved in the attack and helping us score," said Head Coach Rich Manning.
The Utes' defense did another excellent job, allowing only five-shots throughout the game. Junior keeper Lynnsey Asay-Kimball garnered two saves in the game. "I was very pleased by the defense, led by Marpen Harper, Tracy Stratton and Katie Battazzo," remarked Manning.
Utah will continue action this week as they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. to take on the Falcons of Air Force. The Falcons fell 5-1 to BYU in their conference opener. Air Force is sporting a 5-8 season record and 0-1 in conference play. The Utes will battle the Falcons, Oct. 12 at 10:00 a.m. on Cadet Soccer Stadium.
