SALT LAKE CITY -
THIS WEEK:
No. 19 Utah (13-4, 3-1) will host Brigham Young in a 7:00 p.m. match this Friday, Oct. 11, at Crimson Court.
REVIEWING LAST WEEK:
Utah defeated New Mexico 3-1 last Friday before sweeping Air Force on Saturday. In the New Mexico match, four Utes finished with double-digit kills, led by junior Kim Turner, who tied a season and career-high with 22.
Against Air Force, the Utes notched 27 kills before committing their first attacking error and hit for .353 on the match. Senior Brenda Beal led Utah on the night with 11 kills and just one error for a .769 hitting percentage. She also added six blocks.
MWC PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
For the second time this year, outside hitter/middle blocker Kim Turner was named Mountain West Conference Volleyball Player of the Week, marking her sixth overall award. A 6-2 junior from Chandler, Ariz., Turner helped the Utes to a 2-0 mark last week. In a four-game win over New Mexico, she tied a career-high with 22 kills en route to a .450 hitting percentage. She also totaled eight digs and five blocks vs. the Lobos. In a three-game sweep over Air Force, Turner recorded a season-high .588 hitting percentage, totaling 11 kills with just one error in 17 attacks. She also added five digs and four blocks. For the week, Turner totaled 33 kills (4.71 kpg), 13 digs (1.86 dpg) and nine blocks (1.29 bpg), while hitting .491 (33-5-57).
A WEEKEND OF HIGHS:
Over the weekend, several Utes set season and career-highs. In the New Mexico match, junior Jackie Morrill had a career-high 17 digs, while sophomore Kelsie Kartchner finished with a career-high 59 assists. She also tied a career-high with four service aces. Senior Brenda Beal had season highs in both kills (11) and attack percentage (.769) against Air Force. Junior captain Kim Turner hit for a season-high .588 in the match against Air Force and tied a season and career-high 22 kills vs. New Mexico, while sophomore Lyndsey Phillips hit for a career-high .625 vs. New Mexico and had a career-high three service aces against Air Force.

SERIES SHORTS:
* The Utes trail the all-time series with BYU 9-53. The last time the two teams met, on Nov. 16, 2001, Utah won 3-1, at the Mountain West Tournament in Provo, Utah. The Utes are 7-21 at home, 2-29 away and 0-3 at a neutral site vs. the Cougars.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
Brigham Young - The Cougars (7-10, 2-2) are coming off a sweep of New Mexico and their first-ever loss to Air Force at home last weekend. BYU is led by Allison Larson and April Varner, with 2.81 and 2.66 kills per game averages, respectively. Setter Karina Puikkonen is averaging 10.40 assists per game, while Lindsey Metcalf leads the team with a 3.07 digs per game average. The Cougars are hitting .175 as a team and out-block their opponents 3.33 to 2.23.
QUOTING HEAD COACH BETH LAUNIERE:
On the upcoming match against Brigham Young - "With two big injuries, BYU has lost a lot, but I know they'll come in here fired up and it won't be an easy match. I don't care what their record is, it's BYU, which means it's going to be tough. I'm looking forward to it."
MWC LEADERS:
As a team, Utah leads the MWC in opponent hitting percentage (.146) and blocks per game (3.44). The Utes also rank second in assists per game (14.00). In conference matches, the Utes rank in the top four in every statistical category.
Individually, junior Kim Turner leads the conference in blocks per game (1.53), while sophomore Lyndsey Phillips is tied for second (1.45) and senior Brenda Beal is sixth (1.23). Turner also ranks fifth in kills per game (3.73) and 15th in service aces (0.31), while Phillips is eighth in hitting percentage (.304). Senior captain Sylva Strzinkov? ranks third in the league in kills per game (3.97), ninth in service aces (0.33), 12th in digs per game (2.51) and 15th in hitting percentage (.262). Junior Jackie Morrill is seventh in digs per game with a 3.00 average and sophomore Kelsie Kartchner is fourth in service aces (0.48).
HOME SWEET HOME:
Heading into this Friday's match against BYU, the Utes have a 25-match home winning streak that dates back to the 2000 season. Utah, 8-0 at Crimson Court this season, went 15-0 at home last year and won its last two home matches of the 2000 season. The Utes' last loss at Crimson Court came on Nov. 19, 2000, when they fell to Colorado State 3-1.
MILESTONE WATCH:
With seven block assists last week, Kim Turner moved into third place all-time with 353. She also ranks fifth all-time in total blocks (400). With 231 kills on the season, she needs just 100 more to join the 1,000-kill club.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE TROUBLE:
In last Friday's match against Air Force, senior captain Sylva Strzinkov? notched her fourth-consecutive double-double and eighth of the season. She now has a league-high 24 during her two-year career.
Additionally, Strzinkov? has had double-digit kills in all but two matches this season, with a high of 21 against UNLV.
NEXT WEEK:
The Utes travel to Laramie, Wyo., for a 7:00 p.m. match at Wyoming next Friday, Oct. 18. On Saturday, Oct. 19, Utah plays at Colorado State at 7:00 p.m.
