LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) - Nick Jacobsen scored 14 of his 21 points over the final 11 minutes and Utah beat Massachusetts 69-53 Tuesday in the consolation round of the Maui Invitational.
The Utes (2-1) led by 17 points with 12:21 to play and saw Massachusetts (0-2) get within six twice before Jacobsen hit two 3-pointers as Utah pulled away.
Utah will play for fifth place Wednesday against Arizona State, which beat Chaminade 101-72.
Tim Frost had 17 points for Utah, leading the way inside as the Utes took a 49-32 lead with 12:21 left on a layup by Chris Jackson.
The Minutemen took advantage of a sudden cold-shooting spell by the Utes to close to 53-47 on an inside basket by Micah Brand with 6:12 left. Marcus Cox scored on a drive with 4:24 to go to get Massachusetts to 55-49, but Jacobsen took over from the outside.
Jacobsen, who set the school record last season with 71 3-pointers and was 23rd in the nation at 44 percent beyond the arc, hit consecutive 3s to make it 63-49 with 2:35 left.
Utah extended the lead to 69-51 by going 6-for-8 from the free-throw line, a far cry from the 5-for-18 effort from there in the 71-52 opening-round loss to No. 20 Gonzaga.
Jacobsen was 8-for-9 from the line and Utah finished 16-for-27. The Utes shot 58 percent from the field (24-for-41) and were 5-for-10 on 3s with Jacobsen going 3-for-6.
Jackie Rogers had 17 points for the Minutemen, who shot 38 percent (21-for-54), including 6-for-20 from 3-point range.
Britton Johnsen had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Utah.
