REVIEWING LAST WEEK:
The Utes' 2002 season came to an end last Friday, Dec. 6, when they fell to Texas A&M in three games (29-31, 27-30, 15-30) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the University of Southern California. Utah hit for .197 on the match, compared to the .235 of the Aggies. Though they out-blocked Texas A&M 8-4, the Utes committed 11 service errors on the match. In addition, the Aggies dished up 11 service aces, while Utah had just one. Junior Kim Turner finished with a match-high 16 kills on .448 hitting. She also had six digs and five blocks. Senior Sylva Strzinkova, playing in the final match of her career, notched nine kills, five blocks and six digs. Junior libero Jackie Morrill finished with a team-high 11 digs. Utah finished the season with a 25-9 overall record and its fifth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
QUOTING HEAD COACH BETH LAUNIERE:
On the Utes' 2002 season - "It was a tough year for us. After our success last year, we lost five players and still had a bullseye on our backs all season long. I'm very proud of this team. We accomplished a lot and had a great season."
FINAL MWC STANDINGS:
As a team, Utah finished the season leading the MWC in hitting defense (.150) and blocks per game (3.34), ranked second in assists per game (13.82), tied for second in service aces (1.73), third in kills per game (15.25) and fourth in digs per game (13.56) and hitting percentage (.228).
Individually, junior Kim Turner was the conference leader in blocks per game (1.64), and ranked second in kills per game (3.87), tied for seventh in service aces (0.32) and ranked ninth in hitting percentage (.294). Senior captain Sylva Strzinkov? finished fourth in kills per game (3.78), tied for 10th in service aces (0.30), 11th in digs per game (2.52) and 18th in hitting percentage (.242). Sophomore Lyndsey Phillips was fourth in blocks (1.33) and 17th in hitting percentage (.255), while senior Brenda Beal finished tied for seventh in blocks (1.20) and 16th in hitting percentage (.256). Meanwhile, junior Jackie Morrill ranked fourth in digs per game with a 3.16 average, and sophomore Kelsie Kartchner ranked fourth in service aces (0.42) and sixth in assists (10.86).
SINGLE MATCH RECORDS:
As a team, the Utes set the single-match records for block assists and total blocks in a three-game match with 33 and 22.5, respectively, against San Jose State on Sept. 7. Utah also tied the single-match record for service aces in a four-game match with 14 against New Mexico on Nov. 2, 2002.
Individually, Kim Turner set the total blocks record in a three-game match with 13 against San Jose State.
SINGLE SEASON RECORDS:
The Utes set and tied team season records in 2002. For the second year in a row, Utah tied the school season wins record with 25. In addition, the Utes set the single season attendance record with 10,784, more than 1,500 above the previous record.
Individually, several Utes finished the season ranked in the top 10 in various single-season statistical categories. Kim Turner was second in block assists (169), third in total blocks (195), sixth in kills (461) and 10th in hitting percentage (.294). Setter Kelsie Kartchner ranked third in service aces with 50 and seventh in assists with 1,281. Junior libero Jackie Morrill ranked tied for seventh in digs with 376.
MILESTONE WATCH:
In Utah's NCAA Tournament match against Texas A&M last Friday, Kim Turner broke the Ute career blocks record. With another full year remaining, Turner has 500 total blocks on her career. She also ranks second all-time in block assists with 445 (just five away from first place), fifth in kills with 1,130 and seventh in block solos with 55 (just one away from sixth place). After her first two seasons, sophomore setter Kelsie Kartchner ranks fifth all-time in assists with 2,043.
