Salt Lake City - The University of Utah women's volleyball team enjoyed success off the court through many academic accomplishments in the fall semester 2001. Twelve Utes made the honor roll with two athletes also earning Dean's List honors. That is eighty percent (12 out of 15) of the athletes on the team receiving academic recognition in the fall of 2001.
All six starters, four reserves and two redshirts were named to the fall semester honor roll. Athletes qualifying with at least a 3.00 grade point average were Brenda Beal, Adrianne Drake, Alisa Geddes, Shelley Hundley, Kelsie Kartchner, Jackie Morrill, Tracy Neumeier, McKelle Stilson, Sylva Strzinkov?, Kim Turner, Lenka Urbanov? and Brit Whiting. Drake and Kartchner also garnered Dean's List honors with a 3.50 GPA or better. A total of fifty-five players have made the honor roll a combined 213 times (167 quarters and 46 semesters) during Coach Launiere's 12-year tenure at Utah.
Utah women's volleyball was also honored for its academic success by the Mountain West Conference. Beal, Drake, Kartchner, Morrill, Neumeier, Stilson, Strzinkov?, Turner and Urbanov? earned Academic All-Mountain West Conference recognition.
Seniors Drake and Stilson are on track to receive their degrees in May of 2002. Geddes and Urbanov? will take a fifth year and finish up in May of 2003.
The Utes finished the Mountain West Conference regular-season in third place claimed the MWC Tournament Championship in 2001. Utah ended its season with a 25-7 (.781) overall record and a 11-3 (786) conference mark. The 25-7 (.781) overall record comprised the best win-loss record in Utah volleyball history. Utah made its fourth-consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament, posting its first-ever NCAA "Sweet 16" appearance. The Utes own a 5-4 NCAA record. Utah received 797 points for a No. 15 ranking in the Final USA Today/AVCA poll (Dec. 19). Utah broke into the national rankings (21st USA Today/AVCA Top 25 poll) for the first time in the 2001 season on Aug. 13. The Utes maintained a Top 25 ranking throughout the season. The No. 13 ranking in the Nov. 19th poll is the highest-ever ranking for the Utah volleyball program.
"What is impressive about 12 of our 15 players making the Honor Roll, is when you combine it with the success that we experienced on the court as well," said head coach Beth Launiere. "This team experienced a tremendous amount of success as student-athletes, and I am proud of that, and proud of them. I think it is a tribute to their character and their discipline as people. I'm proud that we have so many incredible people in our program," said Launiere.
