FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Utah soccer player, Amy Kofoed, was selected by the San Diego Spirit with the 25th pick in the Women's United Soccer Association's draft on Monday. With over 120 players declaring for the draft, only 32 top-caliber athletes were chosen.
San Diego picked up Kofoed with the first pick in the fourth round. "I am so excited," Kofoed said. "This is the opportunity of a lifetime and it's nice to be recognized. People have heard my name, but now they will be able to put a face to the name."
In her four years at Utah, Kofoed rewrote the record books. Her 43 career goals is a school record and her 102 career points is the best output in Utah's history. Kofoed's 16 assists are second all-time only to Staci Burt, who plays for the WUSA's Carolina Courage. She holds the school and Mountain West Conference record for the most goals in a game (4) and most points in a game (9) set this season against Wyoming. She has started 68 of her career 73 games with the Utes.
Kofoed was named to SoccerBuzz's all-West second team twice and was a first team all-Mountain West Conference selection for three consecutive years. She earned MWC Player of the Week honors on three separate occasions.
The Spirit will start their training camp in March. Kofoed hopes to make an impact and secure her spot on the team.
"This is a big honor," Kofoed said. "I hope this can open the door for Utah soccer players. Utah has not been known for its soccer, but I hope that this will help grab people's attention to give other players in Utah the opportunity to move on."
