College Station, Texas - The University of Utah softball team dropped two games today at the Verizon Aggie Invitational. The Utes lost to Boston College, 5-4 in eight innings and lost 8-0 to Texas A&M on Sun., Feb. 17 in College Station, Texas. Utah is currently 6-13-0 overall, 0-0 in MWC play. Boston College recorded its first win toady and now moves to 1-4 overall. Texas A&M is 10-3 on the season.
In the first game vs. the Eagles, Melissa Stahnke went 2-for-3 with a home run, one run and three RBI. Texi Criddle recorded one hit and an RBI, while Niki Hayhurst tallied an RBI on a sacrifice hit. Heather Bowlin pitched six innings, giving up seven hits, three earned runs and two walks in 27 batters faced. Natalie Tyler went to the mound in relief and pitched the last two innings as the Utes made a three run comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tyler recorded the loss as Boston College scored in the top of the eighth and went on to win. Tyler is now 0-1 on the season. As a team, Utah stranded nine on the bases and manufactured four runs on three hits in 26 at bats.
For the Eagles, Erin Mackey went 2-for-3 with one run and an RBI. Cara Blumfield recorded a home run for BC and Sara Kellner picked up two hits in the game. Tekae Malandris recorded the win, she improves to 1-3 on the season.
Game two saw Texas A&M get some runs on the board. The Aggies held the Utes to a one hitter in the game. Senior Molly McLean went 1-for-2 on the day. Jen Pursell (3-7) took the loss for Utah. She hurled 4.2 innings, giving up eight hits, seven earned runs, three walks and struck out four in 26 batters faced. Jessica Slataper posted the win for the Aggies. She improves to 5-1 overall.
UP NEXT: On Tues., Feb. 19, the Utes will take on Southwest Texas at 3:00 p.m. in a doubleheader match-up in San Marcos, Texas. On Feb. 22-24, Utah will head to Columbus, Ga., participating in the Lead-Off Classic. The Utes will host the Red Desert Classic on Fri.-Sun., Mar. 1-3 in St. George, Utah. Utah opens its home schedule hosting the defending national champion Arizona Wildcats on Sat.-Sun., Mar. 9-10 at 1:00 p.m. and 12:00 p.m. On Thurs.-Sat., Mar. 14-17, the Utes travel to Fullerton, Calif. to participate in the Cal-State Fullerton Kia Classic. On Wed., Mar. 20, Utah is back at home taking on in-state rival Utah State at 3:00 p.m. On Fri., Mar. 29, the Utes open MWC play, hosting the Aztecs of San Diego State in a doubleheader contest at 1:00 p.m. Utah continues MWC play facing UNLV on Sat., Mar. 30 at 3:00 p.m at Ute Field.
