The University of Utah soccer team kicked off its spring schedule on the road last weekend under the direction of new soccer coach Rich Manning. The Utes showed promise for the fall season in their weekend matches against Cal State Northridge and UCLA.
On Saturday, the Utes took to the field against Cal State Northridge, coming away with a 3-0 victory. Missy Dennis led an early Utah charge by scoring the first goal of the game from a Katie Tate to Shauna Gurr-Bingham assist, just 13 minutes in. As a sophomore, Dennis was the third highest scorer for the Utes with six goals.
Bobbie Benegas secured a Ute victory by scoring from a Tate assist at the 24-minute mark and again from an Esther Imotan assist at the 27-minute mark. Benegas scored five goals in here sophomore season with the Utes, including a hat trick against Weber State. The Ute defenders limited CSUN to 6 shots, while the Utah offensive attack consisted of 15. Lynnsey Asay earned the win at goalkeeper for the Utes.
Julie Herdic's goal in the Sunday's game helped the Utes to a tie against UCLA. The Bruins' Emily Ernsdorf gave UCLA the advantage early with her goal in the 19th minute. The teams would play tough defensively throughout the remainder of the first half. The score would remain intact until the 63rd minute when Herdic scored off a cross from Kari Keddington to end the game in a tie.
The Utes will continue their spring schedule by hosting an eight-on-eight bubble tournament on March 16. Utah will field two teams for the tournament, along with two teams from Utah State, a team from Weber State and two Utah club teams.
