SALT LAKE CITY - Head soccer coach Rich Manning announced the hiring of two new assistant coaches for the 2002 season. Gabriel Bolton and Laurel Simpson-Roderick will join Manning and returning volunteer assistant, Mandy Brettingen, in coaching the Utes.
Last season, Bolton led a campaign for fourth-year program, California State University Stanislaus, leading it to an 11-8-1 overall finish. In the three years prior to his arrival, the program tallied a 7-48-1 record. Bolton coached three all-conference players at Stanislaus, including regional All-American Kara Maloney.
In 2000, Bolton served as an assistant coach with Manning for the CalNorth State Team which represented Northern California at Regionals. From 1998-2001, Bolton was the head coach at Sierra College. After starting the program in 1998, he led the team to a 41-16-11 record in three seasons and was named Bay Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 1999.
Bolton also headed the San Juan Soccer Club from 1996-2001. The club earned a 212-54-27 record during his five-year tenure. From 1995-1998, Bolton directed the varsity girl's soccer team at Bella Vista High School to a 50-12-13 record highlighted by a Capital Athletic League Championship in 1996.
A political science product of the UC-Davis class of 1994, Bolton moved on to gain his law degree from the University of Pacific's McGeorge School of Law. Bolton, 30, hales from Claremont, Calif.. He is engaged to be married on May 11, 2002 to Kathy Koumjian.
Laurel Simpson-Roderick joins the team as an assistant after coaching the Celtic Storm Soccer Club and the Timpview High School women's team from 1999-2001. As a player at Brigham Young University, Simpson-Roderick was an all-WAC selection in 1996, '97, and '98.
Simpson-Roderick was named to the NSCAA/Umbro West Region third team. She was a Cougar Club Scholar Athlete and graduated in 1999 with a degree in sociology. She is currently working on a law degree from BYU. Simpson-Roderick, 24, calls Laguna Niguel, Calif., home and is married to Aaron Roderick.
