SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah soccer team announced its schedule for the 2002 season this week. The Utes will compete in 16 games, including eight home contests.
With a handful of quality opponents, the Utes hope to make their presence felt on the national scene and propel the program to its first ever NCAA Tournament. Utah will face five teams that made the NCAA Tournament last season, including: Portland, Kentucky, Idaho State, St. Mary's and BYU.
The Utes open their season at home on Sept. 1 against Portland. The Pilots finished the 2001 season ranked third in the nation by both SoccerBuzz and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The Utes play host to St. Mary's, which finished 2001 ranked 13th by SoccerBuzz and 17th by the NSCAA, in a late September game at Ute Field. Conference games will begin in October, with the Utes hosting San Diego State, UNLV and BYU, while taking to the road to face Wyoming, Air Force and New Mexico.
"I'm excited about the upcoming season," said head coach Rich Manning. "We have some great home games. To open with a team of Portland's caliber and tradition will be a good challenge and an exciting event. St. Mary's was a national revelation last year and returns several key players. BYU will be a conference title contender, as usual."
Despite only taking over the program in January, Manning is optimistic about Utah soccer and the 2002 season. "Having a new coaching staff in place, it will be important for us to find out as much as possible about the team during the regular season. This schedule will serve well to prepare us for the conference tournament and the NCAA playoffs," he said.
