SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's soccer team welcomes back nine starters and 21 letterwinners from last year's team that went 11-7 overall and 3-3 in the Mountain West Conference to place fourth. The Utes will be directed this season by Rich Manning, who spent the past four years as the associate head coach at Santa Clara.
Here are some notes on the 2002 Utes...
- Utah recorded a perfect 7-0 record at home last season. The Utes also recorded seven shutouts, scored four goals or more in five games and were shutout by just three opponents.
- Head Coach Rich Manning takes over the Ute program this season after being an associate head coach for four seasons at Santa Clara. Manning helped direct the Broncos to four NCAA Tournament appearances, three NCAA College Cups (national semifinals) and the 2001 NCAA Championship. During his tenure, Santa Clara went 84-11-2 and won three West Coast Conference championships.
- Senior forward Shauna Gurr-Bingham was second on the team in goals (8) and points (20) and was tied for second in assists (4) in 2001. She was named first team all-Mountain West Conference. Bingham has 16 career assists, tying her for second all-time at Utah. She is six goals shy of Staci Burt's school record of 21.
- Junior Bobbie Benegas recorded one of four MWC hat tricks in 2001 by scoring three goals against Weber State. She earned second team all-Mountain West Conference honors last season.
- Midfielder Amber Brower enters her junior season after earning second team all-Mountain West Conference in 2001. She started 12 games for the Utes last season.
- Senior forward Katie Tate earned 14 points for the Utes last season with five goals and four assists. Tate?s three game-winning goals was tied for second in the conference. She was a second team all-conference selection in 2000.
- Junior goalkeeper Lynnsey Asay-Kimball's six shutouts ranked second in the Mountain West Conference. In 12 games at keeper for the Utes, she allowed just 11 goals. Asay finished the season with a 9-3 record and 45 saves.
- Senior defender Maren Harper was named to the 2001 Verizon Women's Soccer Academic All-America Team for District VII. Harper started all 15 games she played in last season.
- Junior forward Missy Dennis led the Utes with a .375 shot percentage and was third on the team with six goals in 2001. Two of those goals were game winners.
- Utah's Amy Kofoed was drafted by the San Diego Spirit after wrapping up her senior season with the Utes in 2001. Kofoed led the team in goals (12), assists (6) and points (30). Her 46 career goals and 108 career points rank first all time at Utah. Her 16 career assists are tied for second all time. She scored four goals against Wyoming to break the school and MWC records for goals in a game. By adding an assist against the Cowgirls, Kofoed also set Utah?s mark for the most points in a single game with nine.
- Utah placed a conference-high 15 student-athletes on the academic all-Mountain West Conference team. Utah has led the Mountain West in academic all-league selections all three years of the conference's existence. Utes making the list were: Lynnsey Asay-Kimball, Bobbie Benegas, Amber Brower, Missy Dennis, Maren Harper, Julie Herdic, Kari Keddington, Amy Kofoed, Megan Maxwell, Brynn McMillan, Erin Pruitt, Katie Tate, Lisa Vasconcellos, Heather Wilhelm and Lesa Zollinger.
