SALT LAKE CITY--The Mountain West Conference announced its 2002 baseball all-conference teams and postseason awards as selected by the league's head coaches on May 21. Utah rightander Mitch Maio and BYU first baseman Dave Jensen shared Player of the Year honors, while UNLV left fielder Joe Wickman was named Freshman of the Year. Air Force skipper Reed Peters was selected as Coach of the Year. The all-conference team is chosen based on the players' statistics during league games.
Maio, a 6-0, 180-pound senior from Salt Lake City, posted a 6-1 record in conference games and picked up three saves this season. He ranked second in the league with 62 strikeouts and tallied a 4.15 ERA in 65 innings pitched. Maio was the only MWC pitcher this season to throw a complete game shutout as he blanked New Mexico, 3-0, on May 4. The righthander was named MWC Pitcher of the Week four times overall, three times after league games and he tied the school single-game strikeout record of 11 twice during conference play.
"It's really fun to be accepting this award, but there are a lot of other good players who also deserve it," said Maio. "It's good to be in that type of company. I am really accepting this honor because of my teammates. I wouldn't have been 6-1 in conference play without their help."
Maio was also voted to the all-conference first team. Utah's infield was represented well on the all-league second team. Catcher Donald Hawes, first baseman Nate Weese, second baseman Adam Castleton and third baseman Mike Westfall garnered second-team honors.
Hawes, a senior, hit .308 in conference games with 18 RBI. The Tremonton, Utah, native scored 19 runs, stole three bases and connected for five doubles in league play.
Weese, a native of Bountiful, Utah, posted a .336 batting average, drove in 30 runs, swiped nine bases and connected for 42 hits. The 6-0 senior also knocked a league-leading nine home runs in conference play.
The Midvale, Utah, native Castleton boasted a .362 batting average while scoring 31 runs and driving in 27 in conference games. The senior smacked six home runs and compiled a .502 on base percentage and a .649 slugging percentage.
The 6-2, 190-pound sophomore Westfall led the Utes in league games with an outstanding .393 batting average. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native knocked in 29 runs and had 49 hits, including four home runs and eight doubles.
