SALT LAKE CITY--Five Ute baseball players have signed with Major League programs as of Friday, June 14. Senior catcher Donald Hawes signed earlier this week with the Cincinnati Reds. The other four signed with the teams that drafted them last week in the MLB First-Year Player Draft. Junior Jason Wylie, a right-handed pitcher, signed with the Chicago Cubs after being their 12th round draft pick. Outfielder Donnie Saba, a junior, signed with the Arizona Diamond Backs after being selected by them in the 17th round. Senior Nate Weese, a first baseman, was selected in round 23 by the Montreal Expos and has since signed with them. Pitcher Mitch Maio, a senior, signed with the St. Louis Cardinals after being selected by them in the 26th round.
"Every player that we are recruiting has dreams of playing professional baseball," said head coach Tim Esmay. "I'm happy for the five players because they've achieved their goals of making it to the next level. It says a lot to have athletes in our program that can play at the Major League level."
