THIS WEEK: The University of Utah women's soccer team is geared up and ready to open the 2002 season against top-ranked Portland. The match is scheduled to be held on Ute Field, Sept. 1 at 1:00 p.m. The Pilots are currently ranked No. 3 in the Soccer Buzz and No. 4 in the NSCAA/adidas preseason predictions.
LAST WEEK: Utah dowsed Southern Utah in its only exhibition bout of the season, 6-0. Both Julie Herdic and Katie Tate contributed by scoring two goals each as the Utes rolled past the Thunderbirds in an impressive fashion. Heather Wilhelm was also able to make her mark as she connected on a 30-yard shot right before halftime to give the Utes a 3-0. Utah outshot SUU by a margin of 22-5.
UTE NOTES: With the hire of new head coach Rich Manning, the women's soccer team is looking forward to expanding on their winning tradition. Utah returns with a veteran lineup after losing only two starters. Last season the Utes finished with an 11-7 overall record and a 3-3 MWC mark.
NEXT WEEK: Utah will take on another daunting task when they face Northwestern on Thu., Sept. 5. This match will be played in Provo, Utah, at 2:00 p.m.
QUOTING COACH MANNING: "This game will be a great showcase for the fans to come see great women's soccer," says coach Rich Manning. "Over the past decade Portland has been one of the top programs in the country. You always want to measure yourself against the best and I think we have a great chance of doing this on Sunday."
