Utah Faces Gonzaga in Maui Invitational First Round

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah and Gonzaga, two of the perennial top teams in the West in recent years, will meet in the first round of the 2002 EA Sports Maui Invitational on Monday, Nov. 25 at 9:30 p.m. Mountain Time (6:30 p.m. in Hawaii). The complete backets for the 19th annual tournament, hosted by Chaminade University, were announced today.
The Utes, who went 21-9 last season, will face either Indiana or Massachusetts in the second round on Nov. 26. Should Utah advance to the winners bracket, its second round game would tip-off at 7:30 p.m. Mountain Time (4:30 p.m. in Hawaii). If Utah goes into the consolation bracket, its second round game would be at 2:00 p.m. Mountain Time (11:00 a.m. in Hawaii). The Utes are making their third appearance in the Maui Invitational in the last nine years.
Gonzaga has gone to four consecutive NCAA Tournaments and has three starters returning from last year's team that went 29-4. Indiana eliminated the Utes in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament before advancing to the national title game. Finishing 25-12, the Hoosiers return six lettermen this season. The Maui Invitational field also includes Kentucky, Virginia, Arizona State and host Chaminade.
