SALT LAKE CITY - Julie Herdic scored three goals, including two in the first 31 minutes, as the No. 23-ranked Utah women's soccer team defeated Idaho State 4-1 on Thursday afternoon at Ute Field.

Lynnsey Asay-Kimball made three saves and allowed just one goal for Utah to improve to 2-0-0 on the season. The Bengals' Shannon Boyle made four saves but fell to 2-1-0.

The Utes (3-0-1) started things off quick, as Herdic scored on a rebound shot 1:18 into the game. The next score came just over 30 minutes into the game off a long assist from midfielder Katie Battazzo. "The team brings us those goals. I am just the one that is there to put it in," Herdic said.

After the half, Idaho State brought the score to 2-1 with a free kick from Jamie Meehan at the top of the box. "We got up 2-0, then let up; 2-0 is a dangerous lead," said Utah Coach Rich Manning.

"After that goal, we huddled as a team. At that point, we needed a goal," said Ute forward Shauna Gurr-Bingham.

The goal they needed came 10 minutes later at 78:13. Idaho State (3-2-0) brought their defenders up on a throw-in deep in Utah territory. Herdic cleared the ball, and made her way downfield to hit Gurr-Bingham with an assist on the goal.

"I'm very happy with the offensive position. We made a big improvement in that area," said Manning. "Our third goal was great. I thought Julie and Shauna made a great effort."

The Utes topped-off their offensive performance as Herdic put in a pass from Gurr-Bingham 80:01 into the game.

Herdic scored her three goals on four shots. She also had an assist, contributing to all four Utah goals. Gurr-Bingham had five shot attempts, a goal, and one assist. Utah outshot Idaho State 20-7.

Utah plays its first road game of the season at Oregon on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (PDT).
