THIS WEEK: The Utes (3-0-2) will be back on the road to compete against Washington State (5-0-0), Friday, Sept. 20, at 3:00 p.m. (PT). Utah will also take on Montana (2-4-0), Sunday, Sept. 22, at South Campus Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
SCOUTING WASHINGTON STATE: The Cougars are coming into Friday's game with an impressive undefeated record. Last week, Washington State defeated San Jose State, 3-1. Cougar standout Katrina Stroh has moved into a third place tie in the WSU's all-time record book in career assists.
SCOUTING MONTANA: Last week, the Montana Grizzles were defeated by San Diego State, 2-1, in the final match of the UNLV/Fila Soccer Classic at Peter Johann Memorial Field. Montana goalkeeper Sarah Braseth racked up five saves in the contest.
HERDIC NAMED MWC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Utah sophomore forward Julie Herdic was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week after collecting the first MWC hat trick of the season. Herdic's hat trick was the first of her career resulting in a 4-1 win for the Utes over Idaho State.
The Peachtree, Ga., native's first goal was unassisted and the second was assisted by teammate freshman Katie Battazzo to give the Utes a 2-0 lead. She concluded her scoring attack with a break away goal with the assist being credited to Shauna Gurr-Bingham. On the season, Herdic leads Utah and is second in the MWC in points (9) and goals (4).
LAST WEEK: The Utes battled against Idaho State at home and Oregon in their first road game of the season. Utah topped Idaho State with a 4-1 victory. Julie Herdic scored three goals, including two in the first 31 minutes. After the half, Idaho State brought the score to 2-1 with a free kick from Jamie Meehan at the top of the box. Herdic scored her three goals on four shots. She also had an assist, contributing to all four Utah goals.
Utah finished in an 1-1 tie against Oregon. Junior forward Missy Dennis was the hero with her solo goal at the 30:48 mark. The goal resulted off a deflection near center field. Dennis blasted the 16-yard deflection past Oregon goalkeeper Sarah Peters to tie the game at 1-1. Utah outshot the Ducks 14-8.
UTE NOTES: The Utes, 3-0-2, record is the best five game start Utah has ever had. Utah is also second the Mountain West Conference in shutouts (2). Goalkeeper Lynnsey Asay is ranked third in shutouts (1.0). Sophomore Julie Herdic is second in the league in points (9) and goals (4).
NEXT WEEK: The Utes will be back at home to take on St. Mary's and instate rival Utah State. The St. Mary's match will be played on Sept. 29 at 1:00 p.m. and the Utah State game will be held on Oct. 2 at 5:00 p.m. Both bouts will be played on Ute Field.
