THIS WEEK: Utah (1-0-0), ranked No. 23 in this week's Soccer America rankings, competes against Northwestern on Thursday on Ute Field, at 3:00 p.m. The Utes also take on Kentucky, ranked No. 18 in the NSCAA/adidas Poll. This bout will be held at Ute Field on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN: The Wildcats are coming off a 2-0 win over DePaul in their season opener at Lakeside Field last Friday. Sophomore Ashleigh Garmon made her mark with a 20-yard solo shot past DePaul goalkeeper Lindsey Deason. Freshman Tabitha Lowey notched a shot past Deason to score the Wildcats' second goal of the night. Utah is 0-1 against Northwestern all-time.
SCOUTING KENTUCKY: The Wildcats are coming off a shut out win against No. 23 Illinois, 1-0 at the Nike Tiger Invitational. The Wildcats are boasting a 2-0-0 overall record. Utah is 0-1 against Kentucky all-time.
LAST WEEK: Utah opened the season with a stunning victory over No. 3 ranked Portland, 2-0 on Sunday at Ute Field. This marked the first win over a ranked team in Ute history. The Utes goals came from sophomore Julie Herdic and senior Shauna Gurr-Bingham. Herdic's goal came on an assist from Esther Imotan at the 58:52 mark. Gurr-Bingham's goal was unassisted 62:49 in.
The Utes' outstanding defense gave a superb effort, shutting-down Portland's offensive attack. Senior goalkeeper Courtney Hills-McBeth did an excellent job in the first half as she was challenged many times by Portland's forwards. Hills-McBeth make five saves, with most of the action occurring on the Utes' side of the field in the first 45 minutes. Utah ended up outshooting the Pilots 13-8.
UTES MAKE SOCCER AMERICA TOP 25: After getting its first-ever win over a Top 25 team, Utah vaulted into the national rankings for the first time in its history this week. The Utes are ranked No. 23 by Soccer America in its poll released on Monday. Portland, which was ranked No.2 last week, fell to No. 13 after losses to both Utah and BYU. Brigham Young also moved into the Top 25 at No. 24, giving the Mountain West Conference two teams in the rankings.
UTE NOTES: Entering this week, Shauna Gurr Bingham ranks sixth in career goals (23), second in assists (16) and fifth in points (62). Katie Tate is presently ranked sixth in points (50). Senior goalkeeper Courtney Hills-McBeth ranks third in career shutouts (13), while junior Lynnsey Asay-Kimball ranks fourth (8). ... Senior defender Maren Harper has been named team captain this season.
NEXT WEEK: Utah competes against Idaho State on Sept. 12 at Ute Field at 5:00 p.m. The Utes also play at Oregon on Sept. 15 at 1:00 p.m. (PST).
