COMING UP:
The Utes (12-6, 6-1), currently in second place in the Mountain West Conference, travel to Wyoming (14-8, 3-4) and first-place Colorado State (16-4, 7-0) this Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 25 and 26. Sunday's match at No. 18 Colorado State will be televised nationally on College Sports Television (CSTV).
A QUICK LOOK AT UTAH:
Utah won its fourth- and fifth-straight matches at home last weekend, defeating UNLV 3-1 (27-30, 30-27, 30-16, 30-21) on Friday before sweeping San Diego State (30-18, 30-17, 30-24) on Saturday.
Against UNLV, Utah hit for .240 on the match and held the Rebels to just .061. The Utes also out-blocked UNLV 17-15.5. Senior All-America candidate Kim Turner posted a triple-double - 20 kills, 13 digs and 10 blocks. She also hit for .467 on the night. Sophomore Shelly Sommerfeldt and junior Lyndsey Henderson added 15 and 12 kills, respectively. Henderson also had five blocks. Junior setter Tracy Neumeier dished out a career-high 50 assists to go along with six digs and three blocks. Senior libero Jackie Morrill also had a big night, tying a career high with 21 digs.
On Saturday, Utah never allowed the Aztecs to get into the match. The Utes combined for a .327 hitting percentage on the match and held the Aztecs to just .033. Utah also out-blocked San Diego State 11-5. Sommerfeldt led all players with 15 kills on .419 hitting. She also added five digs, two blocks and a service ace. Turner finished with 14 kills, eight blocks, six digs and one service ace. She hit for .500 on the match. Henderson notched nine kills on .467 hitting. Neumeier and Kelsie Kartchner split time setting. Neumeier dished out 26 assists, while Kartchner had 14. Morrill had a match-high nine digs, while sophomore Danielle Leichliter had three service aces.
On the season, the Utes are led by Turner, who averages 3.95 kills, 2.36 digs and 1.53 blocks. Sommerfeldt adds 3.85 kills per game, while Morrill averages a team-high 3.44 digs per game. Kartchner averages 9.82 assists per game, while Neumeier has a 9.37 assists per game average.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
Wyoming
After being swept by Air Force (26-30, 28-30, 26-30) last Friday, the Cowgirls swept New Mexico (30-19, 30-25, 30-24) on Saturday.
Michele Rauter leads the Cowgirls this season with 4.10 kills and 3.04 digs per match. Setter Amy Doman averages 11.78 assists per match, while Amanda Miller adds a team-high 3.27 digs.
Colorado State
The No. 18 Rams (16-4, 7-0) remained undefeated in MWC play with sweeps of New Mexico (30-22, 30-22, 30-27) and Air Force (30-21, 30-22, 30-20) over the weekend. Against New Mexico, the Rams out-hit the Lobos .297 to .174. In the win over the Falcons, CSU hit .260 and held Air Force to .045.
On the season, the Rams are led by Becky Sarauer, who averages 4.00 kills per game. Katie Jo Shirley averages 3.49 kills and 2.13 digs per game, while Melissa Courtney averages 13.06 assists per game. Libero Lindsey Kerr averages a team-high 2.94 digs per game, while Bri Frech leads the team with a 1.23 blocks per game average.
SERIES SHORTS:
* The Utes lead the all-time series with Wyoming 28-23. The last time the two teams met, on Sept. 26 of this year, Utah swept the Cowgirls at home. Utah is 16-9 at home, 8-14 away and 4-0 at a neutral site vs. Wyoming.
* Utah is 17-37 all-time against Colorado State. In their last meeting on Sept. 27, the Utes fell 3-1 at Crimson Court. Utah is 10-13 at home, 3-19 away and 4-5 at a neutral site against the Rams.

As a team, the Utes rank second in the MWC in blocks per game (2.97) and assists (13.74), third in opponent hitting percentage (.179), kills (15.35) and hitting percentage (.238), and fourth in digs (13.27).
In conference-only statistics, Utah leads the league in kills (16.67) and digs (13.42), and ranks second in hitting percentage (.279), assists (14.96), blocks (2.96), service aces (1.83) and opponent hitting percentage (.158).
Individually, Kim Turner leads the league in blocks per game (1.53), ranks second in points (5.13), sixth in kills per game (3.95), seventh in hitting percentage (.310) and 10th in digs (2.36). Sophomore Shelly Sommerfeldt is seventh in kills per game (3.85) and eighth in points per game (4.42). Junior Kelsie Kartchner is seventh in assists (9.82) and tied for eighth in service aces (0.35). TURNER NAMED MWC PLAYER OF WEEK FOR OCT. 12-18:
Senior captain Kim Turner was named Mountain West Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for Oct. 12-18, after helping the Utes remain just one match behind Colorado State in the MWC standings with wins over UNLV and San Diego State last week.
After dropping the first game of the UNLV match, Turner paced a Utah rally by recording her second triple-double of the year with 20 kills, 13 digs and 10 blocks, including three solo blocks, while hitting .467 vs. the Rebels. In Saturday's victory over San Diego State, she hit .500 with 14 kills, six digs and eight blocks. For the week, Turner hit .480 (34-10-50) and averaged 4.86 kills, 2.71 digs, 2.57 blocks and .43 aces per game.
CLOSING IN:
Senior All-America candidate Kim Turner currently has 1,391 kills on her career, good for second place all-time in the Ute record book. She needs 175 more kills to move into first place (1,566). Turner already ranks first in both total blocks (601) and block assists (530), third in block solos (71) and sixth in attempts (2,889).
STEADY SOMMERFELDT:
Sophomore Shelly Sommerfeldt has posted double-digit kills in 17 of 18 matches this season, including 13 straight.
BLOCKING MACHINE:
Kim Turner, the all-time Utah blocks leader, has recorded at least one block in the last 112 matches, dating back to her freshman year in 2000. In fact, the senior has at least one block in 114 of the 115 matches of her career at Utah. The only match in which she didn't record a block was Sept. 2, 2000, against New Hampshire, in just the third match of her career.
TURNER PRESEASON MWC PLAYER OF YEAR:
Senior Kim Turner, the reigning Co-MWC Player of the Year, was selected by the league's head coaches as the 2003 preseason MWC Player of the Year. Turner is the only two-time MWC Tournament MVP in league history.
Joining Turner on the preseason all-conference team was junior setter Kelsie Kartchner, who was named the Best Setter at last year's MWC Tournament.

Utah will face Colorado State on live television at 4 p.m. this Sunday, Oct. 26, at Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colo. The match is part of the College Sports Television (CSTV) and American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Sunday Night Spike package.

TURNER MWC PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR SEPT. 1-6
Kim Turner was named MWC Player of the Week for Sept. 1-6, marking her ninth career award. Turner was named MVP of the Utah Classic for the third straight year as she helped the Utes capture the championship. In a five-game win vs. Washington State, Turner posted a triple double (15 kills, 15 digs, 11 blocks) and set Classic five-game records with nine block assists and three aces. For the week, Turner hit .284 and averaged 3.55 kills, 2.82 digs and 1.82 blocks per game.
