Sometimes, Lauren Field is afraid.
Not a lot, just every now and then.
Her fear has nothing to do with competition, has no roots in missing or scoring goals, in losing or winning games for the University of Utah women's soccer team.
Winning and scoring have come easily. Avoiding seizures and getting her heartbeat regulated have come hard.
During one visit to the hospital, in which doctors put her through something called a tilt-table test, Field's heart stopped beating for 25 seconds. She was in the middle of telling a doctor a joke, and -- bam! -- she flat-lined long enough to freak everyone out. When she regained consciousness, she asked, "What happened?" They told her, and she cried.
There no longer are any tears. There are moments of frustration at her recurring fatigue, at her occasional inability to do what she knows she otherwise could do. Mostly, though, there is respect and appreciation for her capacity to play soccer and compete with her team. On the whole, fear can take a flying leap.
