Utes Beat Wyoming in Five Games

LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Utah volleyball team remained in second place in the Mountain West Conference with a thrilling five-game win (31-29, 26-30, 29-31, 30-26, 15-6) over Wyoming tonight. With the win, the Utes improve to 13-6 overall and 7-1.
Utah hit for .280 on the match, compared to the .214 of the Cowgirls. Both teams finished with 11 blocks on the night.
"Any win at Wyoming is a good win," Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "Wyoming played a great match. We showed a lot of heart to pull the win out."
Senior All-America candidate Kim Turner led a group of four Utes in double-digit kills with 23. She also added seven digs and four blocks. Sophomore Shelly Sommerfeldt added 14 kills, while juniors Lyndsey Henderson and Kelsie Kartchner, playing outside hitter, had 12 apiece. Henderson also added five blocks.
Junior setter Tracy Neumeier finished with a career-high 61 assists. Senior libero Jackie Morrill had 13 digs to lead the Utah defense.
Wyoming jumped out to an early lead in game one, but the Utes tied it at seven. There were then 15 more ties during the rest of the game, with no team leading by more than three points. After the final tie at 29, Utah scored the last two points for the 31-29 win. The Utes hit for .375 on the game, compared to the .219 of the Cowgirls. Turner, Sommerfeldt and Kartchner had five kills apiece to pace Utah.
Game two was close throughout, with 14 ties and no team leading by more than three until Wyoming scored game point, winning by four, 30-26. Utah was out-blocked 4-2 and out-hit .289 to .146 on the game. Turner led Utah with five kills.
In game three, Utah jumped out to an early lead before the Cowgirls tied it at eight. From that point on, there were 15 more ties before Wyoming pulled away with the 31-29 win. The Cowgirls hit for .298 on the game, while Utah combined for a .233 hitting percentage. Turner again led the Utes with five kills, while Morrill had seven digs on the game.
Wyoming called an early time out in game four after the Utes led 6-2. Utah built its lead to as many as six (24-18) before the Cowgirls used a 4-0 run to cut it to two (24-22). The Utes then outscored Wyoming 6-4 for the 30-26 win. Utah hit .371 on the game and held the Cowgirls to .244. Turner had six kills on the game to lead the Utes.
In the fifth and deciding game, Utah scored three straight points to open the game and went up 5-1, forcing a Wyoming time out. After the Cowgirls cut it to two (7-5), Utah scored four straight points to go up 11-5 and Wyoming took its final time out. The Utes then outscored the Cowgirls 4-1 to win 15-6.
