SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah volleyball team improved to 14-7 overall and 8-2 in Mountain West Conference play with a three-game sweep (30-24, 30-17, 30-13) of Air Force tonight at Crimson Court. The Utes hit for .338 on the match and held the Falcons to -.047. Utah also outblocked Air Force 12-5.
"We were able to come out and execute and take care of business," Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "We played a good volleyball match."
Senior All-American Kim Turner finished with a match-high 12 kills. She committed just one error on 17 attempts for a .647 hitting percentage. She also added five blocks.
Junior Lyndsey Henderson and sophomore Shelly Sommerfeldt added six kills apiece. Henderson also had four blocks, as did freshman Amie Toone.
Utah ran a 6-2 (two-setter rotation) for the first time all season. Junior setter Tracy Neumeier dished out 25 assists, while Kelsie Kartchner finished with 10.
Freshman Connie Dangerfield and senior Jackie Morrill had six digs apiece to lead the Utes.
Game one was the most closely played game of the night, as Utah trailed early befre building a late lead and winning 30-24. The Utes hit for .324 on the game, compared to the .094 of the Falcons. Turner had seven kills on the game, while Delvane Diaz, the MWC kill leader, had zero.
Utah dominated game two, using 7-0 and 9-0 runs for the 30-17 win. The Utes hit for .346 on the game and held Air Force to -.038. Sommerfeldt had four kills to lead Utah.
The Utes owned game three, scoring the first seven points en route to the 30-13 win. Utah hit for .312 on the game, while Air Force combined for a -.241 hitting percentage. The Utes also had seven blocks on the game. Henderson led Utah with five kills on the game.
