Last Week
Utah split a two game road trip to Northern California, beating Saint Mary's College 2-0 on Friday and falling to Sacramento State 1-0 on Sunday.
Carisse Winegar scored two goals as Utah blanked Saint Mary's. Winegar's first goal was in the 18th minute on a rebound after Missy Dennis blasted a 25-yard shot. The sophomore forward's second goal came 71:23 in. Freshman Ashley Mason played the entire 90 minutes in goal for the Utes, making five saves to get her second complete shutout of the season. Mason managed the game well and did an excellent job of punting the ball into a stiff wind in the second half, still landing the ball past the midfield line to prevent the Utes from being pinned in defensively.
The Utes' loss to Sacramento State ended a school-record seven-game winning streak. Utah, which had eight shots on goal and outshot Sacramento State 15-6 overall, was held scoreless for just the second time this season. The Utes also had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Ute keeper Kaycie Zimmerman took her first loss in goal this season. Zimmerman made one save before being relieved by Mason in the 70th minute.
Head Coach Rich Manning
Rich Manning is 22-6-3 in his second season at Utah. Last season, he led Utah to a 13-4-3 mark, including a 4-1-1 record in Mountain West play, and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Manning was also named the 2002 MWC Coach of the Year. Before joining the Utah program, Manning was an assistant and associate head coach at Santa Clara (1998-2001). During his tenure, the Broncos made the NCAA College Cup three times and captured the 2001 national title.
Quoting Rich Manning
One starting Mountain West play - "Our number one goal has been to do well in the Mountain West Conference. We had a successful nonconference season and we're looking forward to getting the real meat of our season underway."
On playing Air Force - "Air Force is an enjoyable game to play because they will try to attack, and it is a back-and-forth affair. Their goalkeeper is very good and will provide a challenge for us to score against."
On playing New Mexico - "New Mexico is as tough a defensive team as there is. They are organized and defend with great skill and intensity. We had two great battles with them last season and look forward to another this week."
