SALT LAKE CITY - Kim Turner, co-captain of the Utah women's volleyball team, has been named to the Academic All-District VIII Team. Turner garnered first-team honors with a 3.646 GPA as an elementary education major. As a first-team selection, she now advances to the national ballot, the results of which will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 4.
The six-member first-team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). CoSIDA District VIII is comprised of the states of Alaska, California, Idaho, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington, as well as the Canadian province of British Columbia.
The preseason Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, Turner is averaging 4.02 kills, 2.29 digs and 1.51 blocks per game, and has a .336 hitting percentage. She currently leads the MWC in blocks, attack percentage and points, and ranks second in kills.
The senior has been named MWC Player of the Week 11 times during her career, including three times in 2003. On the season, Turner has 10 or more kills in 22 of 23 matches. She also has two triple- and eight double-doubles. Turner currently ranks 12th nationally in blocks per game.
Turner is the Utah career leader in total blocks (628), block assists (554) and hitting percentage (.310), and ranks second in kills (1,472) and third in block solos (74). She has one or more blocks in 119 of 120 career matches, including 117 straight.
A multiple award-winner throughout her career, Turner was named to the Academic All-District third team in 2002 and was an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) first-team All-West Region pick last year as a junior. She was also the 2002 Co-MWC Player of Year and is a three-time first-team All-MWC selection and a two-time MWC Tournament MVP. She was a Volleyball Magazine honorable mention All-American in 2001 and the MWC Freshman of the Year in 2000.
In order to be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, must be a starter or important reserve and must be in at least their second season of competition at their current school.
