COMING UP:
The Utes (15-7, 9-2), still in second place in the Mountain West Conference, host instate rival Brigham Young (18-6, 8-3), the third-place team, at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7.
A QUICK LOOK AT UTAH:
Utah went 2-0 last week, sweeping Air Force (30-24, 30-17, 30-13) and New Mexico (30-26, 30-24, 30-24). On Friday, the Utes hit for .338 on the match and held the Falcons to -.047. Utah also out-blocked Air Force 12-5. Senior All-American candidate Kim Turner finished with a match-high 12 kills. She committed just one error on 17 attempts for a .647 hitting percentage. She also added five blocks. Junior Lyndsey Henderson and sophomore Shelly Sommerfeldt added six kills apiece. Henderson also had four blocks, as did freshman Amie Toone. Utah ran a 6-2 (two-setter rotation) for the first time all season. Junior setter Tracy Neumeier dished out 25 assists, while Kelsie Kartchner finished with 10. Freshman Connie Dangerfield and senior Jackie Morrill had six digs apiece to lead the Utes.
Against New Mexico, Utah hit for just .193 on the match, while the Lobos combined for a .145 hitting percentage. The Utes were out-blocked 9-8. Turner led the Utes with 13 kills, eight digs and six blocks. Henderson added 13 kills and two blocks, while Sommerfeldt finished with 10 digs, nine kills and four blocks. Neumeier dished out 26 assists while Kartchner had 13. Neumeier also had four service aces. Morrill finished with a match-high 12 digs.
On the season, the Utes are led by Turner, who averages 3.95 kills, 2.25 digs and 1.53 blocks. Sommerfeldt adds 3.72 kills per game, while Morrill averages a team-high 3.42 digs per game. Kartchner averages 8.55 assists per game, while Neumeier has a 9.51 assists per game average.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
Brigham Young
The Cougars went 2-0 last week with sweeps of New Mexico (30-24, 30-21, 30-20) and Air Force (30-23, 30-11, 30-21).
On the season, BYU is led by Kim Wilson, who averages 3.84 kills per game. April Varner adds 3.44 kills per game, while Uila Crabbe has a team-high 3.52 digs per game average. Setter Lauren Richards average 11.44 assists per game, while Lindsy Hartsock and Laura Nielsen average 1.27 and 1.22 blocks per game, respectively.
SERIES SHORTS:
* Utah trails the all-time series with BYU 13-53. The last time the two teams met, on Oct. 10, 2003, the Utes won 3-1, in Provo, Utah. It was the sixth win in a row for Utah. The Utes are 8-21 at home, 4-29 away and 1-3 at a neutral site vs. the Cougars.

As a team, the Utes rank third in the MWC in blocks per game (3.02), assists (13.65), opponent hitting percentage (.172) and hitting percentage (.240), and fourth in digs (13.10) and kills (15.09).
In conference-only statistics, Utah leads the league in opponent hitting percentage (.152), ranks second in kills (15.62), assists (14.31), hitting percentage (.269), blocks (3.08) and service aces (1.67), and third in digs (13.00).
Individually, Kim Turner ranks second in blocks per game (1.53) and points (5.09), fifth in kills per game (3.95) and sixth in hitting percentage (.325). Sophomore Shelly Sommerfeldt is eighth in kills per game (3.72) and ninth in points per game (4.26). Senior Jackie Morrill is second in digs per game (3.42), while sophomore Danielle Leichliter is second in services aces per game (0.45). Junior Tracy Neumeier is sixth in service aces per game (0.37) and seventh in assists (9.51), while junior Lyndsey Henderson is tied for sixth in blocks per game (1.19). Morrill leads the league in digs (3.62), while Neumeier ranks sixth in both assists (11.23) and service aces (0.42). Sommerfeldt is tied for sixth in kills (3.67) and seventh in points (4.21), while Leichliter is second in service aces (0.53). Toone is seventh in blocks (1.18), while Henderson is eighth in both blocks (1.13) and hitting percentage (.324). Kartchner is ninth in assists (5.48).
TURNER REIGNING MWC PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Middle blocker Kim Turner was named MWC Player of the Week for Oct. 27-Nov. 1. It was the 11th such honor of her career and third this season. Turner helped the Utes to a pair of wins over Air Force and New Mexico last week. She hit more than .200 above her season average last week as she put away 25 kills in 40 attempts for a .525 efficiency. She was hitting .319 entering last week's competition. The All-America candidate hit .647 (12-1-17) with five digs and five blocks vs. the Falcons, followed by a .435 mark (13-3-23) with eight digs and six blocks vs. the Lobos. For the week, Turner averaged 4.17 kills, 2.17 digs and 1.83 blocks per game.
CLOSING IN:
Senior All-America candidate Kim Turner currently has 1,450 kills on her career, good for second place all-time in the Ute record book. She needs 116 more kills to move into first place (1,566). Turner already ranks first in both total blocks (624) and block assists (550), third in block solos (74) and sixth in attempts (2,996).
STEADY SOMMERFELDT:
Sophomore Shelly Sommerfeldt has posted double-digit kills in 19 of 22 matches this season. Her 15-match streak was ended in Friday's three-game win over Air Force.
BLOCKING MACHINE:
Kim Turner, the all-time Utah blocks leader, has recorded at least one block in the last 116 matches, dating back to her freshman year in 2000. In fact, the senior has at least one block in 118 of the 119 matches of her career at Utah. The only match in which she didn't record a block was Sept. 2, 2000, against New Hampshire, in just the third match of her career.
TURNER PRESEASON MWC PLAYER OF YEAR:
Senior Kim Turner, the reigning Co-MWC Player of the Year, was selected by the league's head coaches as the 2003 preseason MWC Player of the Year. Turner is the only two-time MWC Tournament MVP in league history.
Joining Turner on the preseason all-conference team was junior setter Kelsie Kartchner, who was named the Best Setter at last year's MWC Tournament.
TURNER MWC PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR OCT. 12-18:
Senior captain Kim Turner was named MWC Player of the Week for Oct. 12-18, after helping the Utes to wins over UNLV and San Diego State. After dropping the first game of the UNLV match, Turner paced a Utah rally by recording her second triple-double of the year with 20 kills, 13 digs and 10 blocks, including three solo blocks, while hitting .467 vs. the Rebels. In the victory over San Diego State, she hit .500 with 14 kills, six digs and eight blocks. For the week, Turner hit .480 (34-10-50) and averaged 4.86 kills, 2.71 digs, 2.57 blocks and .43 aces per game.
TURNER MWC PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR SEPT. 1-6:
Kim Turner was named MWC Player of the Week for Sept. 1-6. Turner was named MVP of the Utah Classic for the third straight year as she helped the Utes capture the championship. In a five-game win vs. Washington State, Turner posted a triple double (15 kills, 15 digs, 11 blocks) and set Classic five-game records with nine block assists and three aces. For the week, Turner hit .284 and averaged 3.55 kills, 2.82 digs and 1.82 blocks per game.
