SALT LAKE CITY - Senior Kim Turner, co-captain of the Utah volleyball team, has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-West Region team for the third year in a row. In addition, senior co-captain Jackie Morrill was named an honorable mention selection. Turner now advances to the national ballot for All-America consideration, which will be announced on Wednesday, Dec. 17.
Turner, the Co-MWC Player of the Year for the second year in a row, was a four-time MWC Player of the Week this season alone. She received the honor 12 times on her career. Turner was named to all-tournament teams at the Arizona State, Utah (MVP) and MWC Tournaments and was the first-ever four-time all-MWC pick.
Turner led the MWC in hitting percentage (.434) and points per game (5.61), and ranked second in kills (4.53) and blocks (1.47). During conference play, she had 231 kills, the top season total in conference matches in MWC history. In addition, her .434 season hitting percentage in conference play was good for third place all-time in the MWC.
Turner reached double-digit kills in 30 of 31 matches this season and had nine double-doubles and two triple-doubles on the year. The all-time MWC leader in both kills and blocks, Turner led Utah in blocks in 23 of 31 matches and in kills 16 times.
Turner ended her career ranked first in the Utah career record books in kills (1,620), total blocks (670), block assists (589) and hitting percentage (.324), third in block solos (81) and fourth in attempts (3,306). She posted at least one block in 127 of her 128 career matches, including 125 straight.
Morrill, the 2003 MWC Top Libero, was also named Top Libero at the 2003 MWC Tournament and at the 2003 Utah Classic. Morrill, who led the Utes in digs in 24 of 31 matches, posted 10 or more digs in 19 matches and had nine digs in six others.
In conference play, Morrill ranked second in digs per game with a 3.53 average. Her 180 digs in MWC matches was the third best in the history of the conference.
On the season, Morrill finished with 389 digs, good for third place all-time at Utah in the individual season record books. She became just the fifth Utah player ever to record 1,000 or more digs, remarkable considering she played setter her first two seasons. Her career total of 1,032 digs ranks fifth all-time at Utah. Morrill also has 657 career assists and has played in 403 games on her career. She is a four-time Academic All-MWC honoree.
