SALT LAKE CITY - Four Utah women's soccer players have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America 2003 All-West Region teams. Senior midfielder Amber Brower made the first team. Freshman goalkeeper Ashley Mason, junior midfielder Tracy Stratton and freshman forward Amanda Feigt were placed on the second team.
Brower led the Utes with nine goals this season-including six game-winners-and had four assists. The Hyrum, Utah, native was named the MWC Offensive Player of the Year, first team all-conference, and second team CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII. Brower scored the first goal and assisted on the second in Utah's 2-0 win over BYU in the MWC Championship final. As a result, she was named tournament MVP.
"Amber had a sensational senior season," said Ute head coach Rich Manning. "Looking back, she had an incredible impact on our team's success. She has always been an excellent defender in the middle part of the field. This season, she improved her offensive game tremendously. She scored important, timely goals all year. In addition to the Mountain West Tournament championship game, she scored game-winners in the Florida game and in our first four Mountain West Conference games. What a year!"
Mason allowed just 0.301 goals per game this season to rank first in the nation. A native of Sunnyvale, Calif., Mason made 58 saves in 16 games. She also had eight complete-game shutouts while contributing to two others. She was the second-team all-MWC co-goalkeeper and held the last six opponents Utah faced scoreless.
"People who attended our games this year will remember Ashley for her athleticism and long kicks," said Manning. "However, I was most impressed with her composure and presence in the goal. She is very deserving of this honor."
Stratton was a major contributor to Utah's defense that gave up just 0.436 goals per game to rank second in the NCAA, behind only national champion North Carolina. The Bountiful, Utah, native also scored three goals and had one assist.
"Tracy was a big reason for our team's defensive success this year," said Manning. "Her dominance in the air and excellent destructive work in midfield kept the ball out of dangerous positions. She was a major factor in our team finishing second in the country in goals against. She has worked hard on her game and it is great to see that work rewarded."
Feigt was second on the team with five goals and led the way with eight assists. She also had two game-winning goals. The Sandy, Utah, native was named the 2003 MWC Freshman of the Year and first team all-conference.
"Amanda had a great freshman year," said Manning. "She was a constant threat to the opposition's goal. She scored big goals, she set up big goals, and stopping her was always in the back of the opposition's mind."
The teams were selected by a vote of all Division I soccer coaches, split up into their respective regions. The Mountain West is in the West Region, along with the Pac-10, West Coast Conference, Big West and Big Sky. The NSCAA All-America team will be selected from the various all-region teams.
Utah, ranked No. 14 in the final NSCAA/adidas poll, finished its most successful season in school history with a record 16 wins. The Utes went 6-0 in Mountain West Conference play to win its first outright league title and captured the MWC Tournament title. Utah also advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year.
