Quickly On Utah

Utah (6-2) heads to SEC country to take on LSU (4-0) on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. (CST) at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center (14,164) in Baton Rouge, La. The game will be televised by ESPN and broadcast on KALL-700 AM and the Utah Sports Network.

The Utes recently swept a three-game homestand, defeating Utah State (56-45) on Dec. 3, San Diego (82-39) on Dec. 6 and Savannah State (87-39) last Saturday.

Freshman forward Andrew Bogut (6-10, 233) leads the Utes in both scoring (11.5 ppg) and rebounding (10.6 rpg). The native of Melbourne, Australia, has had three double-doubles this season and is shooting 61.2 percent from the field. Senior guard Nick Jacobson (6-4, 206) is second in scoring (11.3 ppg), hitting 47.2 percent of his three-point attempts. Sophomore forward Richard Chaney (6-4, 195) is third in scoring (10.9 ppg), shooting 60.3 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from three-point range. Sophomore guard Tim Drisdom (6-2, 212) leads the Utes in assists (3.5 apg). Senior forward Tim Frost (6-9, 244), who has had double-doubles in the last two games, is second in rebounding (5.0 rpg) and fourth in scoring (7.0 ppg).

From The Training Room

* Sophomore forward Richard Chaney was hit in the right eye and suffered a bruise against Savannah State. He is probable for the LSU game.

Scouting LSU

The Tigers are 4-0 are will be playing their first game since Nov. 29 due to the university's required dead week and semester exams. LSU has played all four games at home this season, defeating Southern University (70-59) on Nov. 21, McNeese State (87-77) on Nov. 24, Troy State (78-69) on Nov. 26 and Louisiana-Monroe (96-65) on Nov. 29.

Senior forward Jamie Lloreda (6-9, 245) leads LSU in scoring (26.3 ppg) and rebounding (12.7 rpg). He is shooting 73.7 percent from the field in 32.3 minutes per game. Junior guard Antonio Hudson (6-5, 206) is second in scoring (13.3 ppg), connecting on 7-of-14 three-pointers. Freshman forward Brandon Bass (6-8, 240) is third in scoring (12.3 ppg) and second in rebounding (9.0 ppg). He is shooting 71.4 percent from the free throw line and has 13 blocked shots. Junior guard Xavier Whipple (6-2, 170) is averaging a team-best 4.8 assists per game.

Lloreda and Whipple are the two returning starters from last year's team that went 21-11 and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Eight lettermen were back from last season before sophomore forward Tim Bush elected to transfer to Baylor during the exhibition season.

Head Coach John Brady

John Brady is 106-81 in his seventh season at LSU and 195-158 in his 13th season as a head coach. Brady led LSU to a West Division title, SEC championship and NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in 2000. He also led the Tigers to an NIT second round appearance in 2002 and the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2003. In the last four years, Brady has guided LSU to 81 wins, despite have one team with just five scholarship players due to NCAA sanctions. Brady came to LSU after going 89-77 in six highly successful seasons at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.

Utah vs. LSU Series Notes

* The Utes and Tigers meet for the first time on Tuesday night.

* Utah has a 7-15 all-time record against Southeastern Conference teams, including a 2-4 record on opponents' home courts. The SEC team Utah has played the most is Kentucky, going 2-8 against the Wildcats.

* The last time Utah played in the state of Louisiana was in the 1999 NCAA Tournament at the Superdome. Led by consensus All-America point guard Andre Miller, the No. 2 seeded Utah defeated Arkansas State (80-58) in the first round and lost to Miami of Ohio (66-58) in the second round.

* Rick Majerus has never faced LSU.

Utah's Ferrin and LSU's Maravich Named To Street & Smith's Top 100

Former Ute Arnie Ferrin was recently named to Street & Smith's 100 Greatest College Basketball Players at No. 88. Also making the list at No. 5 was Pete Maravich, who played for LSU and went on to play for the New Orleans/Utah Jazz in the NBA. The list was voted on by a 40-person panel of college hoops experts.

Ferrin was the first freshman to be named NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player in 1944. Only Louisville's Pervis Ellison in 1986 and Syracuse's Carmelo Anthony in 2003 have followed. He scored 22 points to lead the Utes to a 42-40 overtime victory over Dartmouth in the championship game.

In 1947, Ferrin led Utah to the NIT title with a 49-45 win over Kentucky. He was a four-time All-American and a consensus choice as a sophomore in 1945.

Ferrin was drafted in the first round by the Minneapolis Lakers in 1948 and was a part of two championship teams during his three-year career. Ferrin and Tom Gola of LaSalle are the only players to have won NIT, NCAA and NBA titles.

Maravich scored 3,667 points at LSU 1967-70, becoming a three-time consensus All-American and the Naismith Award winner in 1970. He played 10 years in the NBA, including 1974-80 with the Jazz, who moved from New Orleans to Utah for the 1979-80 season. The Jazz retired his No. 7 on Dec. 14, 1985.

Jacobson Stroking "J"s

Senior guard Nick Jacobson (6-4, 206) has been a third team all-Mountain West selection the last two seasons. This season, he is second on the team in scoring (11.3 ppg), hitting 47.2 percent (17-of-36) from beyond the arc and 9-of-13 free throws. He was named to the Preseason NIT all-tournament team.

* Jacobson has already climbed into 22nd place in career scoring at Utah with 1,163 points. He is one of just 30 players in the 1,000-point club and currently ranks behind Greg Deane (1,212 points). Jacobson is also in second place in career three-pointers made (205)-just two away from taking over Keith Van Horn's top mark of 206-and second in three-pointers attempted (482) at Utah. His career three point percentage of 42.2 entering this season ranked fourth all-time.

* Jacobson has scored in double-figures in 53 of the last 71 games dating back to the 2001-02 season, including 27 of the 33 games in 2002-03 and five of eight games this year. Jacobson had a season-high 21 points against San Diego. He shot 6-of-11 from three-point range against the Toreros to tie the second-best mark for threes made and equal the third-best mark for attempts in school history.

* Last season, Jacobson set the Utah records for three-pointers made (80) and attempted (189). In 2001-02, Jacobson made 71 threes to rank second on the Ute single-season charts and attempted 160, which is fourth-best all-time. His 44.4 three-point shooting percentage in 2001-02 is the sixth-best in a season at the U.

Take Note Of These Utes

* Sophomore center Chris Jackson (6-11, 247) had a break-out game against Savannah State. He had career-highs of 10 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots in 28 minutes.

* Sophomore point guard Tim Drisdom (6-2, 212) had a career-high eight assists (only two turnovers) against Savannah State.

* Freshman guard Josh Olsen (6-0, 182) had his best performance to date against San Diego. The Sandy, Utah, native had season-highs of 11 points and four assists (just one turnover) in 28 minutes played. He shot 4-of-7 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point range. Olsen had nine points, hitting 3-of-4 three-pointers, against Savannah State.

* Freshman forward Justin Hawkins (6-4, 207) had a season-high 11 points in 25 minutes against San Diego. Hawkins had a perfect shooting night, hitting all three field goals, his only three-point attempt and all four free throws. He also had three rebounds and three steals. Hawkins came back with nine points and a season-best six rebounds in 23 minutes against Savannah State.

Game #8 Rewind

Andrew Bogut scored 17 points and Utah set a school record for defensive field goal percentage in an 87-39 win over Savannah State on Saturday afternoon in Salt Lake City.

Savannah State (1-6) managed to make just 10-of-55 shots for 18.2 percent as Utah won convincingly for the third straight time.

Bogut, a freshman forward who made 8-of-11 shots in just 15 minutes of play, scored 11 straight Ute points early in the game to stretch the Utah's lead to 18-4.

The Utes (6-2) never led by less than that 14-point margin the rest of the game, which marked their 22nd win in their last 23 home contests.

Tim Frost had 13 points and 12 rebounds for his second straight double-double, while sophomore center Chris Jackson posted career highs with 10 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots.

Thomas Simpson and Dairien Taylor each scored seven points to pace Savannah State in their worst loss of the season.

In the first half, the smaller Tigers tried fronting Utah's big men in the post, but the Utes passed the ball over the top time after time for easy lay-ups. Utah outscored Savannah State 50-10 on points in the paint.

Utah's 48-point win was its largest since defeating Concordia (Calif.) by 51 (88-37) on Dec. 26, 2000.

The Utes shot 53.2 percent from the field and had a 47-37 advantage on the boards. Utah also had eight blocked shots and nine steals to go with a season-best 24 assists.

Ute Items

* Turnovers have been a problem for the Utes so far this year, but they are showing significant improvement in that area. Utah averaged 18.0 turnovers during the first five games, including a season-high 21 against Georgia State in the opener. Since that opening stretch, Utah had 14 turnovers against both Utah State and San Diego. The Utes then had a season-low 12 turnovers with a season-high 24 assists against Savannah State on Saturday. Utah has had a positive assist/turnover ratio in the last two games.

* After shooting just 26.8 percent (11-of-41) from the free throw line against Stony Brook, Texas Tech and UConn (getting losses in the two later games), Utah has shot 65.1 percent (41-of-63) the last three games. The Utes shot 72.2 percent from the free throw line in their first two games of the season.

* The Utes have finished off three close games for wins this season. In the opener against Georgia State, Utah was down 31-26 with 9:36 remaining before coming back to win 46-38. Against Minnesota, the Utes led by just 49-45 with 7:33 to play before pulling away for a 66-54 win. Stony Brook had a 44-39 lead on the Utes with 5:28 left before Utah went on a 12-4 run to close it out, winning 51-48.

Getting Defensive

One of the trademarks of a Utah team during the Rick Majerus era is a stifling half-court defense. Since 1989-90, Utah has ranked in the top 30 in the nation 11 times in scoring defense, nine times in rebound margin, eight times in field goal percentage defense and eight times in scoring margin.

* Utah has held six of its eight opponents to less than 40 percent from the field and three teams to under 40 points. Savannah State shot 18.2 percent against the Utes on Saturday, which is the lowest field goal percentage for a Utah opponent all-time. San Diego shot just 30.0 percent against the Utes on Dec. 6. Only one team (UConn at 62.3 percent) has shot better than 50 percent from the field against the Utes this season.

* Utah has not allowed an opponent to score 80 points in 103 consecutive games that have ended in regulation. The last team to score 80 points on the Utes in a 40-minute game was Wyoming (88) on Feb. 28, 2000 in Laramie, Wyo.

* Last season, Utah ranked 14th in the NCAA in scoring defense, giving up 60.3 points per game. The Utes held 18 teams under 60 points last season and five teams under 50 points. Fourteen opponents shot under 40 percent from the field in while only three teams shot 50 percent or better against the Utes.
