THIS WEEK: University of Utah indoor track and field athlete Nephi Tyler has qualified to compete in the NCAA Championships meet. The championships will be held March 14-15 at the Randall Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark., with the University of Arkansas serving as host for the event. Tyler's mile time of 4:03.19, set at the Oval Qualifier on Feb. 21, ranks fifteenth in the nation and third in the Mountain West Conference. Tyler will compete in the mile on Saturday, March 15.
QUOTING HEAD CROSS COUNTRY COACH BRIAN APPELL: "Nephi qualified for the NCAA Championships as the fifteenth best miler in the nation," states Appell. "He will have the opportunity to compete and move up in the rankings. He his ready to compete this weekend."
LAST MEET: The Utah indoor track and field teams finished the final day of competition for the Mountain West Conference Championships on Friday, Feb. 28. Held at the Air Force Academy's Cadet Field House, the meet featured athletes from all the MWC schools. After the final day of competition the women's team finished fifth with a total of 58 points, while the men placed sixth with 26 points.
Leading the way for the women were Brooke LoBue, Nellie Hammons, Katie Decker, and Kristy Slade. Decker finished first in the high jump with a height of 1.72 meters and LoBue finished second in the pole vault with a height of 3.88 meters. Hammons finished fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:15.58 and Slade placed third in the pentathlon with 3,613 points.
"Our young women's team really stepped up at this championship meet. The 58 points we scored is the second highest total in school history," said Head Coach Lisa Archer. "We had ten personal records during the Mountain West Conference Championships and a champion in the high jump."
On the men's side, Nephi Tyler led the team by placing third in the one mile with a time of (4:15.17). Tyler also finished second in the 3,000 meters with an impressive time of 8:39.92.
"The men's team had a great meet. Of the eight men that competed, seven scored in their events," noted Head Coach Brian Appell. "We scored 26 points compared to 15 in last year's championships. Nephi Tyler had a great meet for us."
NEXT ACTION: The Utes will kick off the 2003 outdoor season with the Baldy Castillo Invitational on Saturday, March 22. The meet will be held in Tempe, Ariz.
