THIS WEEK: The University of Utah outdoor track and field team will continue the 2003 outdoor season with two meets this weekend. Select members will compete in the Stanford Invitational held in Palo Alto, Calif. Hosted by Stanford, the meet will take place on Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field with competition beginning Friday, March 28 and lasting through Saturday, March 29.
The rest of the team will head to Sacramento, Calif., for the Hornet Invitational. Hosted by Sacramento State, the Hornet Invitational will be held at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, Calif., with competition scheduled to begin Saturday, March 29.
QUOTING HEAD COACH LISA ARCHER: "We will take a full team to compete this weekend at the two events," states Archer. "We are looking forward to competing for better marks at both meets on Saturday."
LAST MEET: The Utah outdoor track and field team finished competition at the Baldy Castillo Invitational on Saturday, March 22. The Utes kicked off the 2003 outdoor season with strong performances from athletes on both sides.
Leading the way for the women were Nellie Hammons, Katie Decker, Jen Jackman, and Elise Greenwood. Hammons, who had a very successful indoor season, began her outdoor season with a win in the 800 meters (2:10.81). Decker finished second in the high jump with a height of 1.70 meters. Jackman had a great meet finishing third in the 400-meter hurdles. Her time of 1:01.36 is a new personal record and ranks third on Utah's all-time list. Jackman's performance also qualified her for the NCAA Regional Championships. Greenwood finished third in the 5,000-meter run, while notching a time of 17:50.76.
On the men's side, Jeff Davidson led the team by placing second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. His time of 9:13.42 was a new personal record and ranks seventh on Utah's all-time list. Colby Frazier also had a good meet placing third in the 1,500-meter run and seventh in the 800-meter run.
UTES ON THE MOVE: Sophomore Nellie Hammons is fresh off a first place finish in the 800 meters at the Baldy Castillo Invitational. Hammons has emerged into one of Utah's most coveted runners in 2003 placing fourth in the 800 meters at the 2003 Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships. After such a successful indoor season, the Utes are expecting a great outdoor season from the young runner.
NEXT ACTION: The Utes will travel to Fresno, Calif., for the Fresno Relays on Saturday, April 12.
