SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah Head Coach Rich Manning today released the remainder of the Spring 2003 schedule for the women's soccer team.
The schedule includes the participation by the Utes in two tournaments and two additional matches. The Utes kicked off their Spring season this past weekend when they hosted the Bubble Tournament. Utah went 4-1 in the tournament to win the title.
"The Bubble Tournament was a great way to start the Spring," says Manning. "Now we need to focus on the challenging schedule ahead of us."
Next up for the Utes will be the UNLV Tournament this Saturday, March 8, in Las Vegas, Nev. The Utes will play three 45 minute games against UNLV, Northern Arizona University and BYU.
"We are very excited to get out and play some full-field games in Las Vegas," remarks Manning. "We have 13 healthy players for this weekend and they are all going to get the chance to play in some very meaningful and exciting matches."
Utah's next Spring game will be in Sacramento, Calif., at Sacramento State University on Saturday, April 5, at 1:00 p.m. The Utes will play a single match against the Hornets who compete in the Big Sky Conference. This past season the Utes had two players on their roster from Sacramento, seniors Maren Harper and Katie Tate. This game will be a preview of next season's match against the Hornets.
On Sunday, April 6, the Utes will travel to St. Mary's College in Moraga, Cailf., to compete against the Gaels. Kickoff for this match will be at noon. Utah will be looking for some revenge, as the West Coast Conference Gaels gave the Utes its first loss of the season this past Fall. SMC forward Shauna Rech scored with 36 seconds remaining in double overtime to give the Gaels the 2-1 victory at Ute Field. The Utes were undefeated through its first seven games at the time (5-0-2) including victories over then-No. 3 ranked and eventual NCAA National Champion University of Portland, and then-No. 18 Kentucky. Utah will also travel to St. Mary's College in the Fall for a regular-season bout against the Gaels.
Utah will conclude the Spring season on Friday, April 11, in Provo, Utah at the BYU Tournament. Currently scheduled to attend the tournament are Weber State, Utah State, Southern Utah University and BYU. The Utes played each of the four teams last fall. Utah defeated Southern Utah University last year during an exhibition match 6-0. They also beat Weber State (1-0) and Utah State (3-2) during the regular season. Utah to BYU 2-1 in the regular season finals of the Mountain West Conference at Ute Field before a record crowd of 2,473. Utah got vengeance in the first round of the NCAA Tournament with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Cougars in Provo.
"The Spring season is critical to the development of our players," says Manning. "The environment we want to create here at Utah is one in which each player is challenged and given the tools to reach their full potential."
