THIS WEEK: The University of Utah outdoor track and field team will compete in three separate meets this week with competition kicking off on Tuesday and lasting through Saturday.
Senior Kristy Slade will head to Azusa, Calif., for the Azusa Heptathlon on Tuesday, April 15. Competition for the meet will continue through Thursday, April 16. Nearly 100 athletes from around the country will compete in the decathlon and heptathlon in Azusa next week.
Freshman Vanessa Mortensen, who currently ranks 19th in the nation in the hammer throw, will head to Walnut, Calif., for the Mt. Sac Invitational, hosted by Mt. San Antonio College. Competition will begin on Thursday, April 17 and continue through Friday, April 18. The Invitational will take play on Mt. SAC's world famous Hilmer Lodge Stadium, which has played host to several National Championships and Olympic Trials Meets.
The rest of the team will head to Logan, Utah, for the Mark Faldmo Invitational. Hosted by Utah State, competition for the meet will begin on Saturday, April 19. In addition to Utah State and Utah, the meet will feature athletes from Brigham Young and Weber State.
QUOTING HEAD COACH LISA ARCHER: "We are excited to have Kristy competing in the Azusa Heptathlon," states Archer. "We hope that she earns a national qualifying point total in Azusa. We would like to see Vanessa move up in the national rankings for the hammer throw at the Mt. Sac Invitational. We also look for the rest of the team to have a big weekend in Logan."
LAST MEET: The Utah outdoor track and field team finished competition for the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, April 12. Hosted by Weber State, the meet featured athletes from Brigham Young, Utah State, Idaho State, Montana State and Utah Valley State College.
Leading the Utes were Aubry Startin, Colby Frazier and Nellie Hammons. Hammons took the 800 meters with a time of 2:15.12. Startin notched a second-place finish in the high jump with a height of 5' 6.25". Frazier placed fifth in the 5,000 meters with a time 15:35.55.
UTES ON THE MOVE: Sophomore Katy Barton had a huge weekend at the Wildcat Invitational earning three personal records. Barton earned a personal record in the 100 meters with a time of 12.91. Her performance was good enough for a second-place finish. She jumped 17' 6.50" in the long jump for another pr and a fifth-place finish. A fourth-place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 36' 8.50" gave her a third pr. The Utes are expecting even bigger performances in the future from the Salt Lake native.
NEXT ACTION: The Utes will head to Provo, Utah, for the Robison Invitational, which kicks off on Friday, April 25 and lasts through Saturday, April 26.
