PROVO, Utah - The Utah women's soccer team outscored opponents 10-1 in three abbreviated games at the BYU Women's Soccer Tournament on Friday en route to two wins and one tie. The tournament marked the end of the Utes spring season.
The Utes kicked off the tournament, which featured all five of the Division I women's soccer programs in the state of Utah, with a 1-1 tie against Utah State.
The Aggies struck first five minutes into the contest when they converted an indirect free kick seven-yards away from the goal. The Utes tied the match five minutes later on a goal from Missy Dennis. It was the junior's fourth goal of the Spring season as she finished second on the team in scoring. Neither team managed a goal in the second half and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Utah faced Weber State in the early afternoon. After a scoreless first half, Utah forward Lauren Field intercepted a pass in the midfield and managed to beat the entire Wildcat back-line to place her shot in the lower-right corner of the goal. The sophomore's goal gave Utah the lead with eight minutes remaining in the match.
The Utes held off the Weber State in the remaining minutes to win 1-0. Junior goalkeeper Lynnsey Asay posted the shutout, which marked her fourth of the spring.
Utah finished the tournament with an 8-0 blowout of Southern Utah. The Utes opened their scoring drive with forward Julie Herdic's third goal of the spring off an assist by freshman forward Carisse Winegar. Herdic scored again in the 21st minute and later in the 35th minute to complete the hat-trick. The sophomore's six goals led the team in goals during the spring season.
Junior forward Bobbie Benegas added a hat-trick of her own, with teammates Tracy Stratton and Amber Brower rounding out the goals for the Utes. Winegar had three assists in the game, while Asay posted her fifth shutout of the spring. Utah finished the spring season 6-1-1 in outdoor play.
