The Utah track and field program completed one of its best indoor seasons to date. The Utes set numerous personal and school records and continued to score more points and set even better marks than in years past.
This season the Utes set 132 personal records with 36 marks breaking into Utah's top ten list. At the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships Utah's women's team scored 58 total points, which is the second-highest point total in school history. The Utes also posted four NCAA Provisional qualifying marks with one athlete competing in the NCAA Championship meet.
Leading the women's team were Kristy Slade, Brooke LoBue, and Katie Decker. Slade, a senior had an outstanding season. She is the current holder of Utah's pentathlon record and ranks in the top ten on Utah's all-time list in the 60 meter-hurdles, long jump, shot put, and the 4x400-meter relay.
Slade was impressive at the Mountain West Conference Championships placing third in the pentathlon and fifth in the long jump, scoring a total of 11 points at the meet. She finished the season with seven new personal record.
LoBue, who holds the school record in the pole vault, placed first in six out of the seven meets she competed in for Utah. She won the pole vault at the Oval Qualifier and the Utah Olympic Oval Invitational to assert herself as one of the dominant pole vaulters in the conference. LoBue was a main contributor at the conference championships earning eight points by placing second with a height of 3.88 meters.
Decker had another great year in the high jump placing first in six out of seven meets throughout the indoor season. She currently ranks sixth on Utah's top ten list and set two personal records this year. At the Oval Qualifier, Decker took the high jump with an impressive height of 1.71 meters. Decker finished out the season with a strong performance at the conference championships, placing first and scoring 10 points for the team.
On the men's side, Nephi Tyler proved to be one of Utah's most consistent runners leading the team throughout the year. The Fairhaven, Mass., native also was the leading points scorer at the conference championships. Tyler's third-place finish in the mile scored six points for the men's team and his second-place finish in the 3,000 meters scored another eight points. The junior's performance in the mile qualified him for the NCAA Championships race where he placed 11th (4:09.44). Tyler currently ranks second in the mile on Utah's all time list and has set two NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the mile.
JC transfer Delfino Arevalo followed up a successful cross country season with an impressive indoor track campaign. Arevalo's top finishes, included first place in the 5,000 meters at the Olympic Oval Invitational, first place in the 5,000 meters at the Wilson Motor Invitational and sixth place in the 3,000 meters at the Mountain West Conference Championships.
Utah fans can expect great things from the Ute runners in the future. With a mix of talented newcomers and experience veterans, Utah track and field is becoming a force in the conference.
