SALT LAKE CITY - In a preview of next fall the University of Utah women's soccer team traveled to Northern California this past weekend to take on Sacramento State University and Saint Mary's College. The Utes swept the weekend with a 4-0 triumph over the Hornets on Saturday and a 1-0 win over the Gaels on Sunday.
In its first action since having played on March 8, 2003 in the UNLV Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev., the Utes used sharp passing and a creative offensive attack to down Sacramento State.
It didn't take long for Utah to get on the scoreboard. Seven minutes into the contest Missy Dennis was taken down in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. Dennis placed her shot in the bottom right-hand corner to give Utah the 1-0 advantage.
The Utes struck again in the first half when Dennis finished a terrific pass by junior midfielder Amber Brower for the 2-0 lead 30 minutes into the game. Utah went into the half with a two goal lead, while the Ute defense held Sacramento without a shot in the first half. The Utes outshot the Hornets 8-0 in the first half and 14-1 in the match.
Freshman forward Carisse Winegar, the only other Ute to score over the weekend, netted her first two goals of the Spring season.
Fifty minutes into the game right-back Kerri Keddington made an amazing overlapping run down the right flank and crossed a perfect ball into the box which Winegar flicked into the net with her head. With 14 minutes remaining in the match, Winegar struck again. This time she was the recipient of a perfectly placed through pass by senior Lisa Vasconcellos. Winegar ran onto the ball and hit a sliding shot, which beat the Hornet's goalkeeper at the back post.
On Sunday, Utah avenged a 2-1 overtime loss to Saint Mary's College during the regular season with a 1-0 win on the Moraga, Calif. campus.
Once again Dennis was taken down in the box, this time 37 minutes into the game, and awarded a penalty kick. As she did on Saturday, Dennis hit a perfectly placed shot into the corner of the goal.
It was a tightly contested match with the Utes out shooting the Gaels 11-9 overall. Junior goalkeeper Lynnsey Asay was forced to make a save on a penalty kick with 21 minutes left in the match to preserve the shutout and one goal advantage. Overall, Asay had a spectacular weekend securing a total of 10 saves and not giving up a goal in 180 minutes played.
"This was a great opportunity to play two quality opponents and to get the opportunity to experience the travel and competition we will face next fall," said Utah Head Coach Rich Manning. "Overall I'm pleased with the way the team performed."
Utah will travel to Northern California in the fall to play both St. Mary's College (Oct. 3, 2003) and Sacramento State (Oct. 5, 2003).
Next up, the Utes will compete in the BYU Tournament on Friday, April 11th, in Provo, Utah. Utah will play in-state rivals Utah State at 11:00 a.m., Weber State at 1:00 p.m., and Southern Utah University at 4:00 p.m. The tournament games will consist of two 25 minute halves with 5 minute halftimes.
