U.S. Women's Soccer Team Coming to U. Campus

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah campus will welcome the U.S. Women's Soccer team in mid-June. The Americans will play Ireland at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday, June 14 at 7:00 p.m. in an exhibition match to prepare for the FIFA World Cup, hosted by the United States beginning in late September. Team USA will also hold practices open to the public in the Salt Lake City area the week leading up to the match. Although the schedule is not yet finalized, the team could practice at least once at Ute Soccer Field on the U. campus.
The match, presented by the Utah Sports Commission, will be broadcast live on ESPN2. Team USA was originally scheduled to play South Korea, but Ireland was booked as a replacement when the Asian Qualifying Tournament was rescheduled due to the SARS outbreak.
With the approaching FIFA World Cup, officially moved to the United States from China on May 26 because of the SARS threat, many of America's top-level players will be playing in Salt Lake City. Expected to make the trip are Brandi Chastain, Joy Fawcett, Julie Foudy, Mia Hamm and Kristine Lilly, who played for the U.S. when it won the 1999 Women's World Cup.
"This is certainly a special opportunity to host the world's best players here at the University of Utah," says Ute head women's soccer coach Rich Manning. "It will be great to see, first-hand, the dedication, skill and passion with which these women play. Between the training sessions and the game, the week will be both a learning and inspirational experience. The women on the U.S. team are the kind of role models we crave for. They have reached great heights while never forgetting the youth and the good of the game."
Manning has ties to three of the players expected to come to Salt Lake City from his days as an associate head coach and assistant coach at Santa Clara from 1998-2002. Manning worked alongside Chastain, a former player at Santa Clara, on the staff. He also coached 2001 National Player of the Year Aly Wagner and All-American Danielle Slaton, who have been named to the 2003 U.S. Women's National Team roster.
"They are deep into preparations for this year's Women's World Cup," explains Manning, "so I'm sure that we will see a focused team. We have a strong local soccer community. I encourage all to come out and see the best do their thing."
