SALT LAKE CITY - Utah senior Kim Turner and juniors Kelsie Kartchner and Lyndsey Henderson have been selected to participate in the USA Volleyball A2 training program this summer in Lake Placid, N.Y. They are three of just 19 athletes nationwide chosen to take part in the program.
"This opportunity that these three will have to train with the best players and under great coaches is invaluable," Utah Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "It also puts them in the pipeline to play with the national team someday."
Turner was the co-Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and was MVP of the MWC Tournament for the second year in a row. She was also selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-West Region team.
A four-time MWC Player of the Week last season alone, Turner recorded one triple-double and nine double-doubles during 2002. On her career, she ranks first all-time at Utah with 500 total blocks. She also ranks second in block assists with 445 (just five away from first place), fifth in kills (1,130) and seventh in block solos (55, just one away from sixth place).
Kartchner, who averaged 10.86 assists per game, was named Best Setter at the MWC Tournament. She was also named to the all-tournament teams at the Utah Classic and the Stanford Invitational.
Henderson played in 102 games and 31 matches, averaging 2.28 kills and 1.27 blocks per game. She had double-digit kills in seven matches and three or more total blocks in 22 matches, and was named to the all-tournament team at the Boise State Invitational.
The USA Volleyball A2 Team will be coached by Paula Weishoff-Hanold, an assistant at the University Southern California. Assisting Weishoff-Hanold will be Anne Kordes, an assistant at Illinois, and Robby Pulliza, an assistant at Texas. The program will start July 5 and continue until July 20.
According to USA Volleyball, the purpose of the team is to provide prospective national team athletes with opportunities to prepare for future participation. By bringing in collegiate athletes during the summer months, it allows the players to experience a high level of training and competition at the Olympic Training Center and it further helps the high performance directors and the national team coaches identify which players have what it takes to get to the next level -- international play.
