SALT LAKE CITY - Missy Dennis scored two goals and assisted on another as the Utah women's soccer team won its season opener 3-2 over Colgate on Friday afternoon at Ute Field.
Dennis opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Off a free kick, freshman Amanda Feight was able to set up the senior forward for a score in the lower left corner of the goal.
Momentum then swung in favor of Colgate as the partly cloudy skies at kickoff gave way to clouds, wind and light rain. Kate Barrett converted a free kick 31:26 in. Then less than two minutes later, Kelly Kuss took a pass from Courtney Hostetler that she placed in the upper right corner, giving Colgate a 2-1 advantage.
Both Raider goals came against Kaycie Zimmerman, who was starting her first game. Zimmerman also made two saves in the first half. Another Ute freshman, Ashley Mason, made three saves after taking over at halftime and helped keep Colgate from doing any further damage.
Utah tied things up at 2-2 before halftime as senior Amber Brower got an assist from Dennis and fired one into the lower left corner past Raider keeper Luisa Miller.
Dennis scored the game-winner the seventh minute out of the intermission. She booted it in from close range on the right side of the goal after getting an assist from Carisse Winegar.
Dennis had four of Utah's nine shots on goal. The Utes outshot Colgate 16-10 with eight shots in both periods. The Raiders had seven shots on goal. Colgate had 14 fouls to Utah's nine. Corner kicks were 3-2 in favor of Colgate (0-1).
In addition to playing two freshman goalkeepers, Utah started three other rookies in Michelle Deatherage, Feight and Melissa Wayman.
Utah (1-0) hosts Michigan, ranked No. 17 in the NSCAA/adidas preseason poll, on Sunday at Noon at Ute Field.
